UZBEKISTAN U20 - URUGUAY U20: PREDICTIONS

The Fifa U20 World Cup continues with the 3^rd round of games in Group E. Uzbekistan have been the surpise package in this tournament as they lead the group and look to have one foot in the knockout stages already. Uruguay have a good chance of going through too as they look guaranteed at least a best 3^rd place finish.

Uzbekistan u20 never really read the script and were not expected to perform here. However the side has been a revelation and looks a very balanced and dangerous side. 1^st game up they totally dominated an all be it poor New Zealand side. A 3-0 score line was not over generous either as an Abbosbek Makhstaliev inspired side took the opposition apart. The second match saw them face up to a strongly fancied Croatia who had beaten group favourites Uruguay already. Again Uzbekistan showed their quality with a strong performance, they matched Croatia play for play and looked slightly the better side. A 1-1 was a fair result though and they should have a knockout spot booked bar a heavy defeat in the last match.

Uruguay u20 have yet to really get going in this competition and in truth have not really adapted to conditions. In the 1^st game they faced up to group rivals Croatia. Uruguay were big favourites for the game but it never went to form at all. Uruguay could not settle at all and a powerful Croatia side really got into them and at times were over cynical. Uruguay were second best for long periods and could not match the physicality of the Croatians. Second game saw New Zealand line up and in truth it was very one sided, the Oceania side are a limited team and hardly threatened at all. Uruguay toiled a bit again though and never really created much. A 2-0 win was fair reward and likely sees them make the knockout stage. One player who has stood out for Uruguay is playmaker Giorgian De Arrascaeta. The little forward scored one of the goals of the competition so far with a superb long range free kick.

Both sides look almost qualified already so it’s a matter of jostling for places. The only way either side can be eliminated for me is with a heavy defeat. Both teams play a very similar patient, passing game and I see a match low on goals as both sides will not over commit here.
