Neither side qualified for the World cup finals, but Bulgaria fared better than Belarus in their group campaigns. Bulgaria managed thirteen points from a Group won by Italy and containing both Denmark and Czech, and fared probably better than expected. The squad for this friendly is made of mainly players from the domestic league, with six representatives from champions Ludogorets. Belarus had little hope being in a group containing Spain and France, but will have been disappointed to finish bottom with just four points. Friendly results have seen some decent wins in the last eighteen months though, with six wins, most notably against Japan. Bate Borisov contributes the bulk of the squad with seven represented, and in the FIFA rankings Belarus are at 82, with Bulgaria 72.
