Scotland are going through a renaissance at the moment and most of the credit should go to fantastic manager Gordon Strachan. He really is a great motivator of a player and the results have borne that out. Over the last 18 months Scotland have recorded 5 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses. They sit level on points with Germany in their EC group with 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. Home form recently sees 4 wins and 1 loss with only Auld Enemy England taking points from them. This game will be played at Edinburgh but the crowd will be no less passionate. Scotland go into this one hoping for a win here and then a win against Ireland in the EC qualifiers. Doing so would increase their chances of being in Pot 2 should they qualify (which is now very likely given it’s a 24 team tournament) Qatar come into this one being attacked from all sides from various groups. With off the field problems mounting for their ill-fated 2022 World Cup to the criticism the FA are getting for naturalising foreign player – they had half a team out in the last match (1-1 draw at Northern Ireland) that were not born in Qatar. They have played a lot of matches in the last 18 month period as they desperately try to get up to speed on the field. They have had 11 wins, 10 draws and 5 defeats. The level of opposition is wide and varied with wins over Algeria, Estonia and Lebanon – to losses with Peru and Austrian lower league side Liefering! The recent laborious draw with Northern Ireland is a key pointer for us. Scotland are leagues above the Irish at present so I think that’s a great indicator.

The win here is very important to Strachan as he seeks a Pot 2 for Euros. He knows a brace of wins this week will give them that should they qualify. I take an early lead for the Scots and them to see it out.
