WALES – REPUBLIC OF IRELAND: PREDICTIONS

International friendly with a Gaelic derby, its Wales v Republic of Ireland at the Cardiff City stadium.

Wales are struggling big time in Group A, its not surpising though as it’s a tough group indeed with Belgium, Croatia and Serbia all top sides and Scotland and Macedonia about the same level with no minnows in the group. Wales have 6 points from their six matches so far.  Home and away wins over Scotland (both 2-1) are the only positive results they have managed with 4 defeats from 4 in the other games. Losses to Croatia (twice) Belgium and Serbia with just 2 goals scored and 12 conceded . Wales have some good players and Gareth Bale is world class too, they just don’t have the cover to field 11 decent players.  In recent friendlies they have managed a great 2-1 over Austria but have lost to Mexico, Costa Rica and Bosnia without managing to score. To scorer naturally is Bale with 5 goals. Wales are ranked at 46 with 630 points, their highest ranking for a few years. Injury worries for two of the better players in the Wales squad as Aaron Ramsey and James Collins will be given fitness tests on the day.

Republic of Ireland are in a good position in their tough World Cup qualifying tournament. In a group with Germany, Austria and Sweden  they sit joint second  behind leaders Germany.They have 3 wins 2 draws and 1 defeat from 6 games, Scoring 12 and conceding 10. Friendly games have been more relaxed with three wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats. With 11 scored and 5 conceded Ireland are playing their part in goal laden games. Top scorer over the last year is evergreen striker Robbie Keane with 6 goals.  However Keane is not selected here as Trappatoni takes a look at a few other players, dropping out too are Richard Dunne and Richard Stearman. Total average over the year is 39 goals in 12 games for goal per game of 3.25. Republic of Ireland are ranked at 44 with 639 points.

WALES – REPUBLIC OF IRELAND: BETTING TIPS

A fit and raring to go Gareth Bale as usual will be the difference here. Two sides who are quite similar in quality, although the public perception is that Ireland are better. At a packed Cardiff City stadium I expect Wales to have the edge, my prediction was strengthened with the news that Ireland will leave Dunne and Keane behind to give fringe players a chance.
