The quarter finals are taking shape and so far its been very South American centric. Can Argentina make it another or will Switzerland step up to the plate? Lionel Messi has hauled Argentina this far, can he take another step towards the Golden Boot?

ARGENTINA SO FAR IN THE WORLD CUP

Argentina opened up with a battling 2-1 win over Bosnia. This was a workmanlike performance in which Argentina showed the Europeans quite a bit of respect. There was little to separate the side until Messi opened the game with a moment of magic. As well as Messi’s goal we had an own goal here. There was little between the sides and in truth Argentina toiled for long periods with Higuain and Aguero anonymous. Angel Di Maria looked the most dangerous player.

Colombia followed up with a very nervy 1-0 over no hopers Iran. For much of the game Argentina were again to be found going through the motion. They did not create much at all and at times they looked likely to concede! – Alarming performance again and only for Messi and a 90th minute wondergoal this game would have been drawn.

Last match was the best result with a 3-2 win over Nigeria in a very attacking game.  Again the rest of the team seemed to sit back and wait for Messi to get going. Nobody else seemed capable of doing anything with Di Maria dangerous sporadically and again the likes of Aguero and Higuain largely anonymous. Argentina were shakey at the back too and these are not good signs going into the knockout stages. Messi grabbed two goals here while one of the only other player to gain credit, left back Marcos Rojo bagged the other.

Overall we have learnt nothing new about Argentina, they are wholly reliant on Messi in a similar to Brazil with Neymar. Argentina don’t tend to create much at all and with the midfield being more industrious rather than creative they may be better suited to going into games as underdogs. When they are forced to dictate the tempo they seem unable to do so; Messi has rescued them three times so far and he will need help from others in order for Argentine to progress. Defensively  they look suspect although keeper Romero has looked better than expected.

SWITZERLAND SO FAR IN THE WORLD CUP

Switzerland won against Ecuador 2-1 with what was virtually the last kick of the game. Ecuador opened the game stronger but gradually the Swiss worked their way back into the game.  The Swiss looked better attacking than defending and Ecuador carved them open a few times. Going forwards through the Swiss looked good with Shaqiri and Inler looking very dangerous. Mehmedi and Seferovic netting the goals for the win.

Next match was a disaster for them with France winning 5-2. Swiss chances were not helped by Van Bergen going off injured at 9 minutes. A central defensive partnership of Djourou and Senderos doesn’t inspire confidence and so it was to prove as France scored 5. Switzerland were opened up at  will by France but to be fair most teams would have been hammered here as France were in top form. Switzerland managed two late goals to give the scoreline some respectability with Dzemaili and Xhaka netting.

The game was all about Xerdan Shaqiri, as the Bayern Munich man bagged a hattrick.  Honduras were rubbish here but Switzerland recovered well from the France drubbing. With this game making it 13 goals scored and conceded in just 3 matches it’s the Swiss who are the entertainers!.

TEAM NEWS

Sergio Aguero leaves the Argentina squad after a leg injury. Ezequiel Lavezzi is the man to replace him and he did look more threatening in his cameos than Aguero and Higuian. Philip Senderos may be going head to head with Fabian Schar for a place alongside Djourou in central defence.

RUN OF PLAY

Argentina need other players to step up as Lionel Messi cannot do it all on his own. Midfield of Gago and Mascherano is not exactly high in creativity and Argentina need more from Di Maria, Lavezzi (if selected) and Higuain.  Switzerland have been desperate in defence but very good going forward. This match could be a similar game to the Nigeria one.

ARGENTINA v SWITZERLAND BETTING TIPS

Argentina are big favourites here but I am wondering if they can do it if Messi has an off day? Switzerland will offer up chances however and its impossible for any team to keep Messi quiet for 90 minutes. I think this could be a cracking game and with offence the best defence for Switzerland we could see goals galore here. I take Argentina to win but this games focus is better put to the goals markets.

Back Argentia to win at 1.50 with bet365.

At current prices my betting tip has to be Argentina. Odds are low its true but any team that concedes 6 goals in 3 matches will struggle to contain one of the best players in the world.
