The quarter finals are almost complete and its Belgium and USA to fight out the last spot. Belgium topped their group and won all three games. While USA beat Ghana and drew with Portugal in a group of death.

BELGIUM SO FAR IN THE WORLD CUP

Belgium opened up with a battling 2-1 win over Algeria. This was a poor performance actually and they were behind for most of the game. They created a few chances but didn’t really move out of 1^st gear. Late goals from Fellaini and Mertens rescued the game.

Belguim followed up with a very nervy 1-0 over Russia. For much of the game Belgium were again to be found going through the motions. They did not create much at all and at times they looked likely to concede! – Alarming performance again and only for Origi and a 90^th minute goal they would have had a nervy last match.

Last match was a huge turnover of players as a lot of the squad guys game in. They had to play the entire 2^nd half with 10 men as Steven Deffour received a red card. Belgium more than matched the extra man of South Korea and grabbed a late winner via Verthonghen.

Overall we not learnt much about Belgium. It sounds crazy but they have not put a performance in yet! They have won all three games but you could make a case for each match to be around 50-50 games. Belgium have not had a real go at any team so far. We can take this two ways, either they have several gears they can move up to or they are just a very workmanlike side. Interestingly for Belgium 3 of their 4 goals so far have came from substitutions.

USA SO FAR IN THE WORLD CUP

USA fully deserved the 2-1 win over a Ghana side that eventually tested other group teams Germany and Portugal. USA were full of running and striker Dempsey was the difference. Well organized and solid the US were decent.

Next match was a toe to toe humdinger against Portugal. USA trailed for over an hour but hailed themselves back into the game and took the lead with two goals. They were undone by a 95^th minute goal that put qualification in doubt.

Last match was against Germany and again US showed their quality. They matched the European giants for large parts of the game. They went down 1-0 but looked solid in defence and midfield. Forward Dempsey was often isolated and this was the only negative here.

TEAM NEWS

Laurant Cimor and Van de Borre will not be available for selection. While Thomas Vermealen and skipper Vincent Kompany are doubtful. Backup midfielder Deffour is suspended. USA will give a test to striker Jozy Altidore.

RUN OF PLAY

Belgium are hard to pin down as we have not really seen anything from them to suggest they can upset the big boys. They have ended up relying on subsitutes and this tells me they have real problems settling on their best side. Lukaku has been poor and Hazard too has shown little. USA will run themselves into the ground for sure and they will batter into Belgium at every opportunity.

ARGENTINA v SWITZERLAND BETTING TIPS

This is a lot closer than the market looks and for me the draw offers the best value in this match. Much industry from USA who will contest everything and I think Belgium’s struggle will continue. I do see goals here though for sure. A scoring draw the result for me.
