The World Cup in Brazil has reached the Round of 16. We have another all South American tie as Colombia match up to Uruguay. This game’s buildup has been marred by another bout of canabalism by Luis Suarez. Read here for more inside information.

COLOMBIA SO FAR IN THE WORLD CUP

Colombia opened up with a comfortable 2-0 win over Greece. Colombia dominated all the key areas and fully deserved the win. They were not overly solid defensively here but kept a clean sheet against the limited Greek attack. Goals from Armero, Gutierrez and Rodriguez took the points.

Colombia followed up with a 2-1 over Ivory Coast. Quick, Incisive play was the order of the day here against the Africans but Colombia also matched them in the physical stakes. Goals from Rodriguez and Quintero sealed the win.

Last match was the best result with a 4-1 demolition of Japan. Colombia actually rested players here so its all the more impressive. They were very clinical indeed and buried their chances. Japan actually had a hatfull of chances of their own but were very wastefull Goals from Cuadrado (via penalty) Rodriguez and a double from Martinez took the maximum points haul.

Overall we have taken that Colombia are a strong outfit. Very dangerous on the attack and full of goal threat. Colombia are very quick in attack but also in recovering defense and are also very physical. They are very clinical and do not need many chances to convert. They have a multitude of attacking options and several attackers in great form.  Despite only conceding two goals so far they do offer their opposition chances.

URUGUAY SO FAR IN THE WORLD CUP

Uruguay were destroyed in the 1^st match after a dismal performance against Costa Rica. They were without Suarez and in truth were awful. They were very slow defensively. Limited in the midfield and toothless upfront. Cavani netted a dubious penalty but apart from that Uruguay were poor and a 3-1 loss was fair enough.

Next match was a key result, winning England 2-1 and  all down to Luis Suarez. The Liverpool striker gave a masterclass on his return and scored twice to take the three points in a 2-1 win. Cavani played well here and was the chief creator. Defence was good from Uruguay and midfield shielded well. Uruguay won the match but without having to do much.

The decider was a straight shootout between them and Italy. Uruguay could only pass with a win. The game was very scrappy and as expected not a classic. Again Uruguay defended well and with the benefit of an extra man due to a red card scored to take the win. Scrappy defending and again not creating much.

TEAM NEWS

Luis Suarez is suspended for the next four months. Diego Forlan will likely come into the reckoning to replace Suarez. Colombia will bring back Yepes, Carbanero and Martinez, all rested for the last game against Japan.

RUN OF PLAY

Without Suarez Uruguay have little chance of progression. Their only chance to pass is a draw and a penalties win. I cannot see any other way for them to overcome Colombia. The only Uruguayan who would make the Colombian team is Cavani and they are poorer in all departments. In recent years these sides have only met twice, a win for either side at home.
