Croatia started with a good game against Brazil, and followed it up with an even better performance against Cameroon. Against Brazil Cameroon probably deserved better than the 3-1 loss they had to accept. The ref made some horrible calls against them, and they failed to capitalize on a few really well set up counter attacks. Against Cameroon they were always the better side, but after Song got sent off in the 40^th minute it was never any question who would take down the points. Croatia won 4-0 in Manaus.

It is an issue worth asking how Croatia will deal what has been branded the Manaus effect. Teams having played in Amazonas have seemed bleak on their next performance; drained for energy. It is not going to be a cold afternoon in Recife either.

Mexico beat Cameroon 1-0 in their first game. They deserved more though as the ref robbed them of two disallowed goals. They followed up with a strong 0-0 draw with Brazil. Ochoa had one of those nights between the sticks. He saved a handful of clear scoring opportunities alone. The Brazilian side in general performed well and had their chances in a relatively even game possession wise. Mexico should have no problems with the weather in Recife.

The winner of this group will worst case be number two in the group. A draw will see Croatia on four points and Mexico at five. That would send the Croats packing and Mexico a very likely second in the group.

In short: Mexico are through if they draw or win. Croatia need the win.

Run of play

Given the setting for this game I think Mexico will play their 5-3-2 formation. Stay tight at the back and venture forward on poisonous breaks. It has been a success recipe for them many times. Croatia will have to show they want the win, and they will have to do so coming out of Amazonas for another hot and humid afternoon.

Croatia is a very good side, but as we have seen many times already this world cup: The hot weather conditions get to the Europeans. Mexico can sit back and counter while the Croats spend their energy. It should put the Mexicans in the driving seat. To top it off, Mexico will have plenty of support from the stands. When the going gets tough that can surely get them going.
