Netherlands has had a great world cup so far. In the first game they demolished Spain 5-1. Here they executed several great counter attacks. The Spanish were best in the first half, but could not make it count. In the second half it was all about Holland! Then the Dutch went on to beat a spirited Australia 3-2. This game probably brought the high flying Dutchmen back to earth as they had to fight really hard for the points. Robin van Persie is suspended, and is likely to be replaced by young Memphis Depay. Martins Indi (CB) is a doubt for them here, other than that there is nothing new to report team wise.

Chile has perhaps impressed even more than the Dutch in Brazil 2014. First they beat Australia 3-1. It was nervy at 2-1 for a while, but the Chileans were the better side. Chile then went on to beat Spain 2-0. It could easily have been a bigger win. Aranguiz (Influential midfielder) is a doubt. There is some speculation the mentioned Aranguiz and Vidal (MF) will be benched due to having one yellow card. Another one here, and they are out of the first knock out game. I do not give these type of rumours any weight though.

What are they playing for?

As both sides are at six points versus Australia and Spain’s zero points they are guaranteed to progress to the knock out round. The winner of Group B will play the second team in group A and the winner of group A will play the group B runner up. As Brazil is always going to be the likely winner of group A and Mexico or Croatia the runner up it would make a lot of sense to go for the group win.

The Netherlands has a goal difference of +5 and will therefore be the group B winner even with a draw. This as Chile now has a goal difference of +4 goals.

Run of Play

It is very likely the Dutch will let the Chileans control the ball and go for counters. They showed against Spain they are deadly when they are allowed to counter with speed. It is very likely it will be up to Chile to get the party started.

From what I can see, they defend slightly better than the Dutch, and they can match van Gaal’s men player for player in the skill department.
