Netherlands v Mexico is a fixture from the Brazil 2014 World Cup Round of 16. I trust my betting predictions find you well.

Netherlands so far in the World Cup

Netherlands opened their World Cup with a 5-1 thrashing of Spain. Spain was the better side for 40 minutes, but from there on in it was Holland calling the shots. They executed one deadly counter attack after the other with great success. Spain had no answer to this whatsoever.

Netherlands then went on to win 3-2 against Australia. The Aussies will feel they should have gotten something out of the game for sure. What I noted was that Holland did not look as comfortable when they had to control the game. They also looked shaky at the back when put under pressure.

In the final game of the Brazil 2014 group stage the Dutch again showed great counter attack skills beating Chile 2-0. The score line flatters them though. Throughout I think Chile deserved something out of the game.

Mexico’s World Cup so far

Mexico got underway against Cameroon. They won 1-0 in the end, but the win should have been bigger as two perfectly good Dos Santos goals were disallowed. Cameroon asked few questions of the Mexican defense.

In the second group stage game Mexico’s defense were asked more questions as Brazil charged forward led by magic Neymar. The Mexican defense did very well in my opinion, and keeper Ochoa had a night he won’t forget so soon denying Neymar a couple of goals. Going forward Mexico created several good counter attacks.

In the final group stage game Mexico played Croatia. The Croats had no option but to go forward in search of points, and Mexico countered them to pieces grabbing a 3-0 win in the end.

Team News

Goal machine Robin van Persie returns from suspension. Leroy Fer (Central Midfielder with one appearance as a sub) and Bruno Martins Indi (a regular Central Defender) are unlikely to partake.

Central midfielder Jose Juan Vazquez who has played all three games in the World Cup is suspended for Mexico.

Run of Play

I have no doubt Mexico will play with five at the back here to cope with Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie and Wesley Sneijder. Holland will play to their strengths as usual. Probably playing their full backs quite high up, knowing Mexico will be very defensive. Mexico is short of central midfield players due to injuries and suspensions, so Holland should possibly be able to get their way more often than not in the middle of the park. I am not so sure this has much impact on this particular game though as Mexico’s style of play is not to pack the midfield. They prefer to attack with pace and trickery down the flanks. Against Dutch full backs pushing forward there will be opportunities. Many of them!

Normally Mexico will be glad to hand a considerable amount of possession to Holland and then counter. However, they have enough talent on the pitch to keep hold of the ball too. We also got to factor in that the game is played in Fortaleza at 1300CET. It is going to be warm, and very likely also humid. Mexico is likely to better withstand the heat. This could lead to Mexico wanting to have possession to let the Dutch have a good run around to tire the Dutch legs.

Holland v Mexico betting tips

Holland is made favorite, and the odds ranges from about 2.00 to 2.30 in the market place. Personally I think this opens up the door for a good value bet on Mexico.

Keep in mind Mexico did win the Olympics in 2012. Under the spirited leadership of Miguel Herrera the team has bounced back from a low point. During this world cup they have looked really good no matter how you twist and turn it.

Holland has a decent side, especially going forward. I do however not really rate their defense very much. I think the bookmakers once again over estimate the European side in the tie.

BET 365 offers 3.80 for Mexico. In what to me is a very balanced tie those odds could easily represent 10% value. I have taken this bet, and if you agree with my analysis I suggest you do the same.

New customers at BET 365 can also take this bet with some extra free cash as BET 365 offers up to £200 in the form of a 100% matching deposit bonus.
