USA V PORTUGAL: PREDICTIONS AND BETTING TIPS

USA began with a win against Ghana, where a first minute goal gave them something to hold onto to. They lost out on all stats in the match, except the one that matters, and dug in with great resilience and team spirit to defeat a more talented opponent. Their overall results record is testament to this spirit within the team, and despite their limits ability wise, they will always present a tough challenge. Pre tournament I was expecting this squad to fail miserably, but after that first victory that opinion must change. Forward Jozy Altidore is very doubtful after going off early with a hamstring injury v Ghana.

Portugal were hammered 4-0 by Germany, and though the sending off of defender Pepe in the 37^th minute didn’t help, they were already 2-0 down at the time. Comprehensively beaten it will have done little for confidence in the Portuguese camp, and this game becomes a must win for them. Pepe is suspended as a result for this, and Coentrao(def) and Almeida(str) are struggling to be fit. Main man Ronaldo is also struggling for peak fitness but expect him to be playing, and he will be pivotal if the Portuguese are to break what will be a stern USA resistance, as without him it is difficult to enthuse about the rest of the sides ability to do it.

With a win under their belts the USA will play out their usual grinding hard working game, hoping for a set piece or breakaway to strike a blow if they get the chance. Portugal need to get the win, but could get frustrated if the breakthrough doesn’t come, especially a below peak fitness Ronaldo and the USA are the perfect side to carry out the frustrate tactics. Portugal have the better overall talent obviously, but it could be that the USA team spirit could do enough to get a result here and leave Portugal on the edge of elimination.
