Iceland are currently third in Group E of the European World Cup Qualification with 3-0-2 (6-5) so far overall and 1-0-1 (2-2) at home. Slovenia is rock bottom in the group with three points in five matches (1-0-4, 4-8) overall. At home slovenia is 1-0-2 (3-5). In the reverse fixture Iceland won 2-1. That was a game Slovenia controlled in terms of possession, but Iceland fought hard, and came back from 1-0 down to win 2-1.

Sigurdsson of Spurs is perhaps their biggest name right now, but he sits this one out. With his three goals in five qualification matches he'll be missed. In his place comes Sigthorsson of Ajax. He featured against Slovenia last time. The 23 year old has scored 7 goals in 15 apperances for Ajax this season. He'll be one to watch together with the massively impressive Finnbogason of Heerenveen. Finnbogason managed 24 goals in 33 matches for the Dutch side this season. I'd also like to mention Aron Einar Gunnarsson. He plays for Cardiff who will play Premier League football next season. He put in a great shift for the Welsh side scoring eight goals in forty five outings. The 24 year old is also the Captain of this Iceland side. Former great Gudjohnsen of (Chelsea and Barcelona) now plays for Brugge. At the age of 34 he is still going at it, allthough usually as a squad player. 

Slovenia also has a half decent side. I'd say Tim Matavz of PSV, who scored 11 goals this season is their biggest name in this squad. But Chievo defenders Bostjan Cesar and Bojan Jokic each got over twenty games this Serie A season. Jasmin Kurtic was a regular for troubled Palermo. Rene Krhin (Bologna) and Valter Birsa (Torino) both had considerable time on the pitch too. 34 year old Milivoje Novakovic has been in great form in Japan for Omiya Ardija. He has been awarded with a call up. He also scored in Slovenias recent 2-0 Friendly win against Turkey (Matavaz was also on the scoresheet in that win).

Analysis

For Iceland the absence of their Spurs star will be a tough one to cover. They'll no doubt be weakened in their offensive play. However, with Finnbogason scoring goals for fun in the Eresdivisie they're still a real threat.

Slovenia might not be as good as Switzerland or Russia who both won 2-0 in Iceland, but Slovenia has a team that definitely should be able to keep possession and create some chances against this Iceland side. After all they did seem in control in the reverse fixture. They just couldn't convert on the night.

Slovenia played a friendly with Turkey recently while Iceland did not warm up for this game. I think that is a plus for Slovenia as their newly hired coach Srečko Katanec were given some more minutes to evaluate his squad.

I'm going with Slovenia here. The extra warm up game, and my read on the possession stat leads me to it. I do still call this a balanced tie, but without Sigurdsson I personally think this Iceland side will be much easier to take on than the side that won 2-1 in Slovenia.
