A cracking match in prospect in Riga as Latvia welcome Greece to the Balkans. The Greeks will be bouyed by their impressive perfomances in Poland & Ukraine.

Latvia have struggled over the last few years not hitting the highs of earlier qualifying tournaments. They finished in in the middle of a group containing their weekend rivals Greece. In the two head to head matches they drew at home 1-1 and lost 1-0 away to Greece. The Latvians are trying to bed in an almost midfield and attack. The defence remains the same from years gone by but only star striker Maris Verpakovkis and midfielder Alek Visnakovs remain.The younger generation are led by exciting prospects such as striker Edgars Guaracs and midfielder Aleksander Caunas. The latter player particularly looks a real player. Latvia tend to alternate between 4-4-2 and 4-4-1-1. Greece had an excellent summer and made a real impact at the Euro 2012 tournament. With a game plan of a 4-3-3 formation and hardwork coupled with stout defending they managed to make it to the Quarter-Finals before losing to strongly fancied Germany. In qualification Greece won 7 of their 10 matches and drew the other three matches in a group that contained Croatia, Israel and Latvia. They then knocked Russia out in the group stages of the finals tournament. The side has no real standout players, relying more on collective effort and discipline.
