Italy has suffered a dip in form after their excellent European Championship campaign. They unexpectedly made the final of the Euros thanks to excellent wins over England and Germany before losing in the final to the amazing Spain team. Since then Italy lost in a friendly against England and then drew their first World Cup qualifier 2-2 away at Bulgaria, a match they felt they should have won.
Malta had been on a rich run of form having won 3 straight games going into World Cup Qualifying, albeit against a very low standard of opposition. Their first qualifying game was a home match against Armenia that was lost 1-0 thanks to a 70th minute goal from Armenian substitute Artur Sarkisov.
