Fiorentina has lost Jovetic this transfer window, and Pizarro is injured. They have brought in excellent players such as Mario Gomez from Bayern Munich, Josip Illicic from Palermo, Joaquin from Malaga and Massimo Ambrosini from AC Milan. Everyone expects this side to fight for a Champions League spot this season as well. If they are lucky, perhaps also have a go at the Scudetto.

Catania has sold the little attacking midfielder Alejandro Gomez. I can’t see they’ve brought a decent attacking replacement, but they have thrown some euros on strengthening their defensive setup. Tachtsidis also looks a good buy at central midfield. The youngster played 17 matches from start for Roma last season.

Run of play

Last Serie A season there was 14 points between the sides after 38 matches played. Since and including 2011 this fixture has been played three times. Fiorentina has won twice and once it ended 2-2. The total goal difference in that interval is 7-2. Obviously it looks like Fiorentina has a good grip on Catania.

Last season the Viola won 2-0. Catania didn’t offer much going forward. The ball was found in midfield or on Catania’s half 78% of the 90 minutes. The little Catania created they couldn’t convert. Fiorentina weren’t great themselves, but they dominated possession 60-40 and a much higher pass completion percentage than Catania. I think we will see a very similar match this weekend.
