Napoli:
The Azzurri managed to finished 5th last season and to win the Italian Cup in the last match of 2011/12. They have lost star Lavezzi to PSG and sold some second line players but have added some important players to strengthen their squad like: rising starlet Insigne (Pescara), Gamberini and Behrami (Fiorentina). Are still looking to bring in an extra striker. The squad looks incomplete even if midfielder Gargano has already been replaced by Belgian starlet El Kaddouri from Brescia but a replacement for Cavani might needed to give him a break during the long season.
Manager:
Walter Mazzarri has in the last few years done a great job, first at Sampdoria now at Napoli. He has managed to give the team a very balanced look.
Star striker:
No doubt is Edison Cavani, at the centre of many european teams interest this summer but seems to stay at Napoli. Scored 23 goals in Serie A last season and is one of the favorites to win the goalscorer table in this upcoming season.
Palermo:
The club in pink and black will try once again give their all. ‘Volcanic’ president Zamparini, who always gets rid of managers on a whim and takes part of the pre-match line-up, has entrusted Sannino to deliver good results. The team has not changed very much from last season; A few good players have been sold as its in the club’s policy, but some very interesting youngesters have been brought in. Out: Acquah (Parma), Viviano (Fiorentina), Bacinovic (Verona) and Balzaretti (Roma). In: young and interesting midfielder Nicolas Viola (Reggina), Arevalo Rios (Club Tijuana) and especially new Argentina’s sensation 18-year-old Paulo Dybala (Instituto).
Manager:
Giuseppe Sannino is the man behind the great season Siena had last year. He also achieved some excellent result with Varese just before that. His teams are always very compact and likes plays with a 4-4-2; also he is a good ‘teacher’ for the youngsters. But will it be enough to survive the axe from his new president?
Star striker:
Captain Fabrizio Miccoli scored 16 times last season and is the leader of the team. His performances have been very constant through the years and once again Palermo count on him to escape relegation and maybe even go the extra mile. Miccoli has refused some rich offers from Arabs clubs just to stay at Palermo.
Parma:
Parma is probably the club that has changed the most this summer, despite an impressive 8th place last season and has brought in some good players that could make the team even go for an Europa League spot if things go as planned: Amauri (Juventus), Colombian international Pabon, Ninis (Panathinaikos) and Rosi (Roma).
Manager:
Despite the failure with the national team, Roberto Donadoni, has had a very convincing season with the gialloblú last year. His football is pleasant and Donadoni inspires himself to his ex manager Arrigo Sacchi.
Star striker:
Amauri is at second experience at Parma after a short spell in 2011 when he scored 7 goals in 11 matches. Having been unconvincing at Juventus has now moved permanently to Parma where he hopes to finally convince critics that he deserves a return to the Azzurri.
Pescara:
The winner of Serie B last season will have to fight hard to stay in the top division this year. They have lost their best players: Immobile (Genoa), Insigne (Napoli) and Verratti (PSG) but especially manager Zeman who has left them for AS Roma. As it was the man behind the magic the team showed in last Serie B championship.
New players will try to keep the team up and the management has worked hard to bring some international players in the likes of: Celik (Gais), Weiss (Manchester City), Jonatas (Brescia) and Vukusic (Hajduk Split).
Manager:
Massimo Stroppa is a new entry for Serie A. Ex-Milan player who won a Champions League with Sacchi; last season was coaching at Sudtirol where he obtained a 7th place. Surprisingly Pescara have appointed him as new manager and despite not much experience they hope he can help them to avoid relegation.
Star striker:
We believe it could be Croatian Ante Vukusic; the striker who has recently been called up for his national team, has scored 36 in 84 matches for Hajduk and at Pescara they hope he could impress and help them with his goals.
Roma:
It has been a very busy summer for the giallorossi. Having lost Spanish manager Luis Enrique, who resigned after a stressful and underachieving season. The club has decided to bring back Zdenek Zeman, the coach who loves extremely attacking football and who won last year's serie B league at a canter. The management, led by Capello’s ex assistant at England Franco Baldini has got rid of all the players in excess. Among the players who have left we have: Pizarro (Fiorentina), José Angel (R.Sociedad), Fabio Simplicio (Cerezo Osaka), Gabriel Heinze (Newell’s), Greco (Olympiakos), Juan (Internacional), Borini (Liverpool), Cicinho (Sport Recife) and Cassetti (Watford). Of those brought in: Piris (Sao Paulo), American midfielder Bradley (Chievo), Italy’s left back Balzaretti (Palermo), Castan (Corinthians) and Italy’s new sensation striker Mattia Destro (Siena). A proper revolution that has made Roma second favourite for the title just behind Juventus.
Manager:
Zeman is well known for his attacking football. 4-3-3 with a very offensive style and a very high offside line. His idea is to score more goals than the opponent no matter how many are conceded!. He is at his second experience at Roma after 1997-99 and definitely his last chance to win something important.
Star striker:
Roma is said to have the best attack in serie A; first because of their attacking way of playing but mainly because the quality of their striker is notable: Totti, Destro, Bojan, Lamela and new youngster Nicolas Lopez but we believe their star this season could be the Argentinean with Italian passport Osvaldo. Last season despite few too many red cards and few injuries managed to scored 11 goals but this season could really be his year.
Sampdoria:
Back to Serie A after a year purgatory in Serie B, Sampdoria will try to live up with their history and do a very decent championship. The team has been strengthened for the category bringing in some good players like Maxi Lopez (Catania), Estigarribia (ex-Juventus), De Silvestri (Fiorentina) and Maresca (Malaga). Also former Italy Under 21 coach Ciro Ferrara has been named manager after the club from Genova offered the position to Rafa Benitez.
Manager:
Ciro Ferrara, former Juventus coach, where he replaced Claudio Ranieri; has done well with the younger National side, in fact managed to lose only one match out of 19 played. Ferrara could be the right choice and at Samp could have the right environment to do well and launch himself in his new career.
Star striker:
Maxi Lopez has played for some of the top sides in world football; River Plate, Barcelona, Gremio and Milan. Now Lopez has the opportunity to be the team’s most important player and despite not being an out and out striker he can definitely lead them to a comfortable safe stay in serie A.
Siena:
The small Tuscan club is ready to start their 3rd straight championship in Serie A. Last season's team has been dismantled with coach Sannino and striker Brienza gone to Palermo and star striker Destro to Roma. Meanwhile the team has been given to Cosmi and few good players have been signed: Felipe (Fiorentina), Verre (Roma), Valiani and Dellafiore (Parma), Martinez (Racing Avallaneda) and Rodriguez (Belgrano).
Manager:
Serse Cosmi is a very dynamic coach who has his teams playing very focused and plays with lots of pace. He has had few ups and downs in his career but is definitely a coach that always gives 100% and his teams are often difficult to face and beat.
Star striker:
Not a player who scores many goals but a hard working striker who can also assist. With the departure of Destro, Siena hopes are now all on Emanuele Calaió and the ex-Napoli and Torino player will have his opportunity to shine and get noticed.
Torino:
Another newly promoted side Torino are one of the biggest club in Italy. The have struggled of late spending three years in Serie B. The team has kept last season structure and some new players have been added on: Cerci (Fiorentina), Brighi (Roma), Santana (Napoli), Meggiorini (Genoa) and young promise Sansone (Sassuolo).
Manager:
Giampiero Ventura is a very experienced coach and with his experience Torino hopes to maintain the Serie A position. He is building a solid team and so far managed to keep the club’s best players: defender Ogbonna and striker Bianchi.
Star striker:
Rolando Bianchi is a striker that has changed many clubs before stopping at Torino. The ex-Manchester City player has been fundamental to Torino's promotion and with the right assistance can definitely help them to achieve their goals.
Udinese:
Probably the most notable club in Europe to have a positive financial balance as well as football results. In fact Udinese every year manages to sell some of their best players and bring in new youngsters. Who mixed with some experienced ones tend to adapt quickly and bring them profit. Again this summer players have left like Asamoah and Isla to Juventus, Handanovic (Inter), Cuadrado (Fiorentina) and Floro Flores (Granada) and in come some new possible future stars: Muriel who was on loan to Lecce, Willians (Flamengo), Maicosuel (Botafogo), Brkic (Siena) and Pasquato (Juve).
Manager:
Francesco Guidolin is a successful manager who has done well with different clubs, Vicenza, Bologna, Palermo and Udinese; he also shown to be good at working and launching youngster. Last season managed to arrived third in the league qualify Udinese for the preliminaries of the Champions League for the second year in a row
Star striker:
Antonio Di Natale is goal machine striker that has helped Udinese to achieve some great results in the last few years, apart from some personal ones. 136 goals in 265 matches and still hungry for more. Once again he’ll be leading the team from up front but will he be able to maintain such a record?
