MOTHERWELL – CELTIC STATS

Motherwell has surprised some people this season and sit top of the SPL table after 7 games. They are still undefeated having won 3 matches and drawn 4. This is their first tie against title favourites Celtic however so it will be interesting to see if they can continue their fine league form.

Celtic have not had the start to the season most were expecting and have dropped points in 3 of their 6 matches so far, including a 2-1 defeat at St Johnstone. They are still well placed in the league and could go top if they win their game in hand against Dundee United.

TEAM NEWS AND RUN OF PLAY

Motherwell have played some excellent football this season so far and are scoring goals for fun having managed 13 in the SPL so far which is most of any team. They will be disappointed by the midweek result in the league cup, a 3-0 defeat to third division newco Rangers, but I don’t think this will dent their confidence long term. With Rangers being in the 3^rd division they only have the domestic cups as their ‘big games’ whereas Motherwell have games against top SPL opposition week in and week out so are less worried about the smaller cup games.

Celtic seem to have bounced back from their shock defeat at St Johnstone two weeks ago and have won their last 2 domestic games by multiple goals. A 4-1 demolition of Raith Rovers was a good result to get the confidence going, especially for Gary Hooper who bagged all 4 goals.

Like every SPL game this year Celtic are favourites. I feel they have turned the corner after a poor start where they may have got complacent and expected the wins to be easy. Now manager Neil Lennon will have drilled the team that every game needs to be fought for and their performances in the last 3 games have been much improved.
