TEAM NEWS AND RUN OF PLAY

The top game of the week in Spain sees the top 2 in the league play for the first time this season.  Barcelona currently hold a 6 point lead over Atletico and are unlikely to be caught, Atletico’s attention will be on city rivals Real Madrid who are just 5 points behind them and closing.

Barcelona’s squad is the fittest it has been all season and they have almost a full strength side to pick from with just long term absentee’s Cuenca, Abidal and Muniesa out.  They have got their first choice centre half pairing of Puyol and Pique starting games which makes them much more solid defensively. 

The big news from Barcelona is that Lionel Messi has broken the calendar year goalscoring record which was held by Gerd Muller at 85.  Messi after another brace midweek is now sitting on 88 goals and is likely to break the 90 goal barrier before the year finishes, a record that could stand for ages.

Atletico have a star striker of their own in Radamel Falcao who scored a stunning 5 goals in their 6-0 win over Deportivo last week.  He still lags behind Messi with 16 league goals to Messi’s 23 but he is the hot property in Europe at the moment and many clubs will be in for his signature in January or next summer.
