REAL VALLADOLID – ATHLETIC BILBAO: PREDICTIONS

Real Valladolid welcome Athletic Bilbao to Jose Zorilla for the opening match of Spain La Liga.

Real Valladolid managed to confirm safety last season with a few games to spare, which would be considered a success after only winning promotion the year before. Few changes in personnel for Valladolid, out of note goes defender Mikel Balenziaga and winger Alberto Bueno. A few coming in but little real quality, if the incoming only real standout player is striker Humberto Osorio, the Colombian has a very good strike rate for several teams across South America.  A couple of doubts for the weekend in striker Daniel Larsson and midfielder Victor Perez.

Athletic Bilbao had a year they would rather forget, a terrible league campaign was only really saved towards the end of the season.  Marcelo Bielsa reign was fraught  with internal and external strife and he duly left in June. The “Cantera” policy of only signing Basques has been relaxed somewhat but only one player out of the area is active in the squad. The signings made already show that Basques are still only really actively pursued.  Talisman striker Fernando Llorente has left for Juve and it must be a blow for the club as he left for nothing.  With Fernando Amorebieta leaving too there is a couple of key players to replace.  Three decent players have been signed with Kike Soler, Benat Etxeberria and Mikel Belanziaga all signing on.

Over the last 6 fixtures there have been 1 Valladolid win, 3 draws and 2 Bilbao wins.  Goals aplenty with 19 goals scored,  8 for Valladolid and 11 for Bilbao.
