The Spanish Super Cup gave us two classic games last season, a thrilling 2-2 at the Bernabeu followed by an even more thrilling 3-2 win for Barcelona at Camp Nou. This season’s tie is just as anticipated, for the first of many times this season we’ll see the two leading teams in Spain and Europe go head to head in a bitter rivalry.
Real Madrid won back the title last season after a 4 year spell of domestic dominance by Barcelona. They will feel the season was a turning point where finally Jose Mourinho got the better of a Barcelona team who has frustrated him by their brilliance. Madrid may be accused of complacency this summer however with no improvements to the first team squad, their only major interest was Luka Modric from Spurs, with the transfer saga still on-going. Indeed they already find themselves playing catch up to Barcelona after a shock 1-1 draw at home against Valencia on the first day of the season, a result that Madrid cannot afford to repeat often or they’ll quickly find the league beyond them.
Barcelona will be disappointed that both the la liga title and the Champions League title were wrestled away from them last season and they will be determined to win them back this year. They have made a few strong changes to the squad; firstly filling in their weakest spot last season left back with Spain’s European Championship winning starter Jordi Alba, who signed for €12m from Valencia. This will balance their fullback attack with both Alba and Alves able to break forward at lightning speed to join in attacks. Their other major signing is Alex Song from Arsenal who will fill the role vacated by Seydou Keita and allow the other midfielders and even defenders to rest when needed.
Total Goals
As usual when these teams meet, many goals are expected. Over 2.5 Goals is priced at 1.67 with the Under at 2.35. Last year’s super cup brought us 9 goals over the two games and if you look at Real and Barcelona’s games, only 11 of the last 50 have been under 2.5 goals.
Asian Handicap
Barcelona at home are the favourites for this tie with the handicap set at Barcelona -0.75 @ 2.01 and Madrid +0.75 @ 1.93. Madrid’s poor league start will be a wake-up call to them but will it be enough to get a result at the Camp Nou. If Barcelona continues with the form they showed at the weekend, and they will have players like Pique and Iniesta fresh having not started, then Barcelona should have enough to get the win.
