SHAKHTAR DONETSK – DYNAMO KIEV: PREDICTIONS

Biggest game of the weekend in Europe and surprisingly it is in Ukraine Premier League. Shaktar Donetsk v Dynamo Lkiev, it is known simply as the Derby of Ukraine and should be a really exciting game.

Shakhtar Donetsk  are late bloomers from the old USSR in that they never won a single Championship until 2001. Since that time though they have collected 8 league titles in all, with the last four in a row. They have created a dynasty in Ukraine and their model is to buy players and then sell on at a huge profit. The latest in a long line are Willian, Fernandinho and Henrik Myhitaryan.  All bought for less than 20 Million but sold for over 80 Million. Incoming is Wellington Nem and one to look out for in Fred. The Internacional playmaker is not to be confused with the Fluminense striker, but will be some player in his own right. Shakhtar are very short to retain the title again but do not be surpised to see them do well in Europe again.  They have opened up with three straight wins, beating Hoverla, Sevastapol and Chernomorets.

Dynamo Kiev are the most successful side from the old Soviet Union. With 9 Soviet titles and then 9 Ukraine titles they are the winning most side from the old Eastern Bloc. However they have struggled of late to keep up with Shakhtar Donetsk, with Kiev having to settle for three consecutive runners up medals until last year when it got worse! Dynamo Kiev were poor for a lot of the season and ended up scraping home in 3^rd and missing out on the vital Champions League spot. This season’s challenge has faltered slightly with dropped points already. Dynamo have drawn with Volyn but have recovered well to beat both Sevastapol and Hoverla.

This game looks very likely to be a classic encounter but I can only see one winner here. Shakhtar are a far superior side and have greater strength in depth. Shakhtar have won the last five encounters (3 at home and 2 in Kiev)  I take Shakhtar to continue their dominance over Kiev and make an early blow on their huge rivals. 1.91 Shakhtar Donetsk with Coral.
