In this tennis prediction article we take a look at the 2012 US Open Men's tournament and the top players that will battle it out for this year's trophy.

The top 10 seeded players

1. Number 1 seed Roger Federer is showing good form prior to this year’s last Grand Slam tournament. He won the Cincinnati tournament – as he’s done several times before - and will come into this US Open with confidence.  He regained the overall ranking title after winning the Wimbledon tournament and his 17th Grand Slam title, and will be on the hunt for his 18th in the US Open. Federer won’t meet Djokovic until a possible final which is good considering The Joker will be his biggest opponent in this tournament. He will play against Donald Young in the first round – which should result in an easy 3-0 match for the Swiss man considering the opposite form of these two.

2. Novak Djokovic won this tournament last year by beating Rafael Nadal in an epic 3-1 final that lasted for more than four hours.  Unfortunately an injury-plagued Nadal won’t be joining the US Open this year, the same injuries kept him away from the Olympics too. Djokovic hasn’t been able to repeat the run of a lifetime he showed us last season, but that wasn’t expected either. Novak is still showing promising play and has an easy route to the quarter finals – where he will meet up with Juan Martin Del Potro.

3. Andy Murray has made it to four Grand Slam finals and lost them all, but won the gold in the Olympics on home court, when he cruised past Federer in the final. The Brit may have taken another step towards grabbing his first Grand Slam with his win in the Olympic Games, but his form prior to this US Open tournament has not been up to speed. Murray had to withdraw from the second round in Toronto due to injury, whilst he lost in the second round of Cincinnati for the Frenchman Jeremy Chardy. In other words - not the best warm up towards this US Open. Murray will face Federer in a possible semifinal, for his first round he will meet up with the Russian Alex Bogomolov Jr.

4. David Ferrer, a player that has never made it through to a Grand Slam final, but he’s consistently within the 5th-10th placings. The Spaniard has a semifinal place as his best record to this date in the US Open, but it came back in 2007. Ferrer has not shown us his best play lately like he did in the French Open and Wimbledon. The Olympic Games was a letdown, the Cincinnati tournament as well. He will meet Kevin Anderson in the first round, a game that could prove to be difficult against a “Big Server”, but the South African’s form has not been the best lately.

5. Jo Willfried Tsonga did well in Wimbledon and made it through to the semifinals, and again in the Olympics where he was stopped by Djokovic in the quarter finals. Tsonga is a feared player by everyone when he’s in form, he is a player that can go all the way, but so far there’s been only one Grand Slam final for the Frenchman and that came in the 2008 Australian Open. The Frenchman has a decent road ahead of him, he will meet up with the Slovakian Karol Beck in the first round. His biggest challenge isn’t until the fourth round where he could meet the Japanese Kei Nishikori or Marin Cilic.

6. Tomas Berdych has been a disappointment lately. He went out in the first round of both Wimbledon and the London Olympics, after two surprising losses. Things have picked up some prior to the US Open, but we’re still not seeing the good old Berdych we know. He made it through to the finals in Winston Salem where John Isner edged a win after an evenly played out game. Berdych will meet Federer in the quarter finals and will have a very tough time going any further than that. For the first round he will meet up with the up and coming player David Goffin. This should be an interesting - and could prove to be a potentially difficult - matchup versus a hungry player like Goffin.

7. Juan Martin Del Potro, a.k.a. “Delpo”, won the US Open back in 2009 after beating Roger Federer in the final. The Argentinian would normally be closest to the fourth best, but due to injuries it hasn’t been easy for him to keep up. Finally his form is now picking up and he got a great confidence boost by winning the bronze medal over Djokovic in the Olympics. He’s been showing good form prior to US Open, but a small injury held him back early in the Cincinnati tournament when he had trouble with his left hand in the game versus Troicki. Del Potro do not have an easy way to the finals. Already in the first round he will meet an experienced player in David Nalbandian, with whom he shares a place on the Argentinian Davis Cup team.

8. Janko Tipsarevic has shown great improvement in play these last two years, he’s ranked No. 9 on the ATP Tour, but is seeded No. 8 in this year’s US Open due to the absence of Nadal. The Serbian has shown us great play this year and he was in good form prior the Olympics as well, but he lost in the third round to the big server John Isner.  He has a relatively good way ahead of him and will meet the young Frenchman Guillaume Ruffin in the first round, but Tipsarevic may have to meet up with John Isner again in the fourth.

9. John Isner is among the home fans' best hope this year and the form of John indicate to us that he can be very dangerous. Isner won the tournament on Saturday in Winston Salem after wonderful serving, and this will be his biggest and most important weapon in New York. The question for John in these tournaments is his physical form as it is hard to tell if he can keep going if he’s involved in many tight matches. We often see him do well in the US Open, especially at the start of the tournament, however his best result came last year when he advanced through to the quarter finals. Isner meets Belgian Xavier Malisse in the first round, and this can prove to be a tricky game if Malisse is in the right mood to play, but it is never easy to know with players like this.

10. Juan Monaco showed tremendous form on clay this season, the Argentinian advanced to two finals in two weeks. However, after this things didn’t go as great on faster surfaces – he went out already in the second round in the Olympics. In preparation for the US Open things haven’t gone as well for the Argentinian, who has struggled to bring out the good game we saw of him earlier in July. All in all he has a decent draw for the first two rounds, though possibly going against Andy Roddick in third round. Monaco meets Spaniard Guillermo Garcia Lopez in the first round.

Players to look out for

I think the Belgian David Goffin has really taken a step up after the French Open and has grown much these 3-4 months. He is a player who seems to have plenty of confidence these days, but is unlucky with the draw and is playing against Berdych in the first round.

Andy Roddick a player which probably has seen his best days on the tennis court. However, Andy has won this tournament and his only Grand Slam title once before, back in 2003. Roddick probably became pro at the wrong time, and has had to fight for titles against players like Roger Federer for years, but now it's not only Federer, but players like Nadal, Djokovic and Murray as well. Roddick can always make a good US Open tournament and proved as recently as in late July in Atlanta that he can still perform at a high level by winning that tournament.

Roddick meets the young Rhyne Williams in the first round. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Roddic progress to the 3rd or 4th round. One thing is for sure, when popular Andy Roddick enters the court in the United States it is usually more than tennis we receive from him, and we will not be surprised if Roddick serves the judge a good scolding too.
