Newcastle failed to capitalize on several glorious chances to score in the first leg. Going to Ukraine to play Metalist is never going to be easy. This is set to be an action packed game with a home side feeling they can complete an upset versus a Newcastle side that on paper looks the real deal.
Stats, Facts and News
Metalist has been the 3rd best side in Ukraine since the 2006/2007 season. They are definitely a few notches off the pace compared to Shaktar Donetsk, but they’re a side filled with South American talent. In the first leg Metalist used 13 players. Only two of those were Ukrainian. Their best players are striker Cristaldo (Argentina) and Attacking Midfielder Cleiton Xavier (Brazil). At the minute they’re in the middle of the winter break, but that did not affect Metalist too much in the first leg. They will be spurred on by their performance, and be high on confidence.
Metalist is a solid home side with 6-1-2 at home domestically and 7-2-1 in their last 10 Europa League games (including Qualification). This season their best win was a 2-0 home win against Leverkusen of Germany. The Germans did however rest quite a few players for that game.
Newcastle will miss cup tied Yoan Gouffran (Striker) and Mathieu Debuchy (Defender). Ben Arfa (Attacking midfielder) might be in contention after being out a while. Danny Simpson (Defender) and bits and part striker Ameobi sit this one out due to injury. So does long term absentee Ryan Tylor (Defender) and bits and parts players Gosling and Vuckic.
Newcaslte has had a poor season domestically. Most of the season has been ruined due to injuries to be fair. The sale of Demba Ba in January to Chelsea however, can’t have affected the Magpies too much as they’ve brought in plenty of class act replacements. Coach Alan Pardew has indicated the Europa League is something the Toon is up for. They were really unlucky in the first leg in my opinion. Decisions went against them, and they could not convert chances to goals.
Betting predictions
Metalist is a good side, of course. The stats point at this being a very tricky tie for Newcastle. I do however think Newcastle can go there and get a result on the basis of being a better side overall. The cold weather in Ukraine this time of year is no problem for the UK sides, and I suspect Metalist will focus slightly more on defending, trying to hit on the break. Newcastle should have enough firepower to overcome that.
