BARNSLEY – SOUTHAMPTON: PREDICTIONS

Barnsley will hope Southampton have an off day in this Capital One Cup clash at Oakwell.

Barnsley have had a poor opening to their season, not unlike last year it seems. Four games into the season and they are rock bottom with just 1 point after a draw and 3 defeats. A four goal home loss to Wigan and a 5-2 away drubbing at Blackburn has showed up some of the old weaknesses. Indeed Barnsley never even “won” in the last round, they had to rely on penalties against lower league Scunthorpe after 120 minutes of goalless football.  Martin Crainie and Lewis Nytanga are out while Jean Yves Mvoto is suspended.  New men Paddy McCourt and Martin Pederson could start here.

Southampton sit on four points after a win and a draw in their opening two Premiership games. The South Coast side added Italy international striker Osvaldo to their squad to show just how far the side has come in the last few years. A slight worry in this game is how serious manager Mauricio Pochettino takes this competition.  Morgan Schneiderlin is a fitness doubt while Luke Shaw has a knee problem.
