SHREWSBURY – BOLTON: PREDICTIONS       

Capital One Cup already after just 1 round of league fixture sees this interesting tie at New Meadow, Shrewsbury face up to Championship Bolton.

Shrewsbury have bounced around the lower tiers of England football over the years and even tasted non league too. The last few years have saw a steady rise and they have peaked at League 1. They do not have the infrastructure to go any higher as it stands and indeed they are 2^nd favourite in the betting to be relegated back to League 2. The squad is small and there is a distinct lack of quality their too.  Shrews opened up with a draw 0-0 at home to MK Dons.

Bolton missed out on the playoffs by a single point last year as they seemed to choke under the pressure.  Coach Dougie Freedman will be happy with his current squad, which is one of the best in the league. The jinxed Stuart Holden is back in his second home (the injury room) after rupturing knee ligaments in the recent Gold Cup. Club skipper Kevin Davies has left but is replaced by a better forward. Top striker Jermaine Beckford checks in and could be the missing piece that Bolton need to return to the top level. Bolton never got going in the opening match and only really came alive in the last 10 minutes, but not losing at Burnley is not a bad result.

Two key factors for me in early rounds of these cup competitions is the manager of the bigger side and then the squad of that side. Some managers are notorious for actively seeking an early exit. Dougie Freedman is not of of these so we can look to backing Bolton. As to the squad of Bolton it is huge and has strength in depth so they tick both boxes. William Hill are a standout 1.91 when other books are nearer 1.70. No early movements as yet, I suggest an early bet on Bolton and great value.
