CHELSEA V MANCHESTER CITY PREDICTIONS AND PREVIEW: BETTING STATS AND FACTS

Chelsea are 3^rd in the table with 24 points from 12 matches and have won 7, drawn 3 and lost 2.  They have scored 2.0 goals per game while conceding 1.08, leading to a +11 goal difference.  Their last 5 EPL matches has seen just one win followed by 2 draws and 2 defeats with an aggregate score of 9-9.

Manchester City are top of the EPL with 28 points from 12 matches and are still undefeated, winning 8 and drawing 4.  They have scored 2.08 goals per game while conceding 1.42 and have a +15 goal difference which is the best in the league.  In their last 5 matches they have won 4 and drawn just 1 with an aggregate score of 10-2.  3 of the matches ended with over 2.5 goals.

TEAM NEWS AND RUN OF PLAY

The big news from Chelsea this week is of course the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo as manager and Rafa Benitez to replace him as an interim coach.  This is on the back of a very poor run of results for Chelsea with no wins in 4 in the league and a thumping 3-0 defeat away at Juvetus in the Champions League which could cost them their place in the knockout stages.

Rafa knows that he must make an instant improvement and this is a real baptism of fire.  A defeat in this match would leave them 7 points behind City which would be a very difficult gap to bridge.  To stay in the title fight they must get an immediate performance from the players and at least take a point in this game, but with only 3 days to work with the players before the match it won’t be easy.

City were left disappointed midweek when a 1-1 draw with Real Madrid knocked them out of the Champions League in the group stage again for the second straight year.  This has put manager Roberto Mancini under pressure but he’ll feel while they are top of the league his job is safe. 

City are still experimenting with a back 3 which although improved from their early season attempts, still doesn’t seem to suit them.  Against Chelsea with one focal attacker in Torres ahead of 3 floating attacking midfielders a back 4 should be the best formation and I think City play their best football when in it.

The market has both teams as very tight here with Chelsea a small favourite as the home side.  Chelsea has not won in 2 EPL matches at home after a defeat against Manchester United they drew with Liverpool.   While City’s away form seems good with 2 wins and 3 draws in their last 5.

I like Ladbrokes offer of 2.62 for a Chelsea home win.  They should have a new confidence under Rafa and will know their title challenge is on the line here.

With both teams so closely matched the Asian Handicap is set at 0.  Again there is a slight edge to Chelsea here and I’m going to stick with them.  Their only home loss, against Manchester United, was a match they dominated after going a quick 2 goals behind and was only settled after two controversial red cards for Chelsea.
