Newcastle v West Brom predictions and preview: Betting stats

Newcastle sit 11th in the Premier League with 10 points so far (W2 D4 L2) and have recent form of DWDLD which displays their inconsistency so far this season. At home they have beaten Spurs and Norwich, drawn with Aston Villa and most recently been beaten by Man Utd. Their games have averaged 2.63 goals with 4 exceeding 2.5 goals; 4 with fewer.

West Brom have started the season in some style and are 6th in the league on 14 points (W4 D2 L2). Their form has been pretty similar to their hosts at LWDWL and with their sensational home form they’ve been pretty poor away from home; two 1-1 draws with Spurs and Villa wither side of a 3-0 defeat at Fulham. Their games have averaged the same and seen the same number of over/under as their opponents.

Head-to-head between these sides in recent seasons has seen goalfests to say the least! Since both teams returned to the Premier League the results have been 3-1, 3-3, 2-3, 1-3 with last season’s corresponding fixture being a 2-3 win for West Brom.

Team News and Run of Play

Newcastle welcomed both Steven Taylor and Tim Krul back last week and this can only aid their so far leaky defence. Tiote serves the first of his three match suspension for his red card against Sunderland and only long-term injury worries remain for the home side. West Brom could see the returns of both Billy Jones and Jerome Thomas, the latter returning to training this week.

Newcastle haven’t set the league alight quite like they did last season but they are still grinding out decent results against tricky opposition. They held on to an early lead until the final minutes against their North-East rivals last weekend and bearing in mind they had 10 men for a lot of the game they did really well. Another home win in the Europa League on Thursday can only help their confidence going into this game.

West Brom’s confidence on the other may have been massively dented by the late defeat against Man City last week. They have not recorded a win away from home this season and perhaps should have done better against Aston Villa in their most recent away tie. I suspect they will continue to play in the same way under Steve Clarke as they are definitely not playing badly.

This game will be an interesting matchup and I believe the home side will try and use their flair players such as Hatem Ben Arfa to make the difference. I suspect Cisse and Ba will play up front together and Newcastle fans will hope to see them link up and get Cisse on the scoresheet.

Newcastle v West Brom predictions: 1X2 betting preview

This is certainly not an easy game to call; both sides have similar form and I think it may have a lot to do with confidence and momentum. For me Newcastle are the side with the momentum currently following a good derby performance and a good European performance. West Brom would have been devastated by the manner of their defeat to Man City so I’d probably back the home win at 2.05 with William Hill.

Newcastle v West Brom predictions: Asian Handicap preview

As I can see Newcastle taking all three points and they are around the Even money mark the bet in this market would be Newcastle (-0.5). However, with no bookies offering odds exceeding the 2.05 in the 1X2 market there lies no value here.

Newcastle v West Brom predictions: Total Goals preview

Despite the previous 4 encounters between these two sides averaging 4.75 goals, Newcastle’s home games this season have averaged 2.25 goals and West Brom’s away games have averaged 2.33 and that suggests we could be in for a fairly low-scoring game. I think the trick here is in looking for the value in the market. I would have had the market as each-of-two so for me the value lies in under 2.5 goals at 2.00 with Paddy Power.
