TEAM NEWS AND RUN OF PLAY

Southampton have really found some top form lately and it seems to have coincided with the return of record signing Gaston Ramirez from injury.  A lot of eyebrows were raised when the newly promoted side spent €15m on a single player but Ramirez looks to have the quality needed for the EPL and at 22, he has plenty of time to develop. 

Another big reason for their improvement in results is their defence tightening up.  At the start of the season Southampton were leaking goals but in their last 5 games they have allowed just 3 goals which is a huge improvement.

Sunderland have regressed since the start of the year and what looked like a well organised solid defence has started conceding a lot of goals while still being unable to score many themselves.  They have conceded multiple goals in 3 of their last 4 games which was unheard of early in the season.  They are very close to falling into the relegation zone and a tough Christmas period won’t help.

Southampton are favourites here as the home side and when you look at their recent form you can see why.  They are undefeated in 4 at home, conceding just twice in that time.  Sunderland meanwhile have lost 3 of 4 away from home.
