Southampton v Swansea predictions and preview: Betting stats

Southampton are bottom of the Premier League with 4 points (W1 D1 L8) and recent form has been as poor as you’d expect at LDLLL. At home they have picked up all 4 of their points but have conceded plenty of goals. On average their games have 4.20 goals with all but two seeing over 2.5 goals.

Swansea, after a decent start, are 11^th with 12 points (W3 D3 L4) and their form has been inconsistent at LDWLD. Away from home they began the season with a good win but have since lost their last 3 games without scoring. Their games have averaged 2.90 goals with 6 over 2.5 goals; 4 have seen fewer.

The last game between these sides was in the 2008/09 season in the Championship and finished 2-2 between two very different Saints and Swans sides.

Team News and Run of Play

Richardson remains out for Southampton whilst Swansea may welcome back Chico. Vorm and Bartley will be out for at least another month for the visitors and Taylor is out until next season.

Southampton have been unable to get the results they might deserve so far this season and have been punished by their poor defence. The 2-0 defeat at West Brom on Monday night showed how poor they are when an in-form striker faces them. Their 28 goals conceded from the first 10 games is one of the worst in Premier League and First Division history and it doesn’t look like they will suddenly stop conceding either.

Swansea haven’t been the same team since the opening couple of games. They have lost their last three games at home but last week’s 1-1 home draw against Chelsea may instil some confidence in a side that seems disjointed and in need of a boost. They will see this as a possible confidence boost but I don’t expect it to be too easy for them.

For me these two sides are both out of form and will both see this as a winnable game. I do however think that neither side has the firepower or the defensive prowess to keep the other team low scoring. I think this game could end in a high-scoring draw and a price of 3.62 with Pinnacle looks like a really good bet for the weekend.

Southampton’s fans have been treated to a total of 19 goals at St Mary’s which is a slightly lower average than their away games but with Swansea’s inability to score goals away from home it might be worth favouring the unders. For me, however, Swansea have faced some good defences in those recent games and I think facing Southampton’s flimsy back line means this game will surely see over 2.5 goals; 1.67 with William Hill.
