WIGAN – ASTON VILLA PREDICTIONS
Wigan ended up having nearly a dream season for them but ultimately they dropped down so it’s ended up disastrous. Aston Villa have plugged along gamely with such a young side. Paul Lambert was rightly given time even though some idiotic Villa fans were screaming for his head early on.
Wigan took their 1st major trophy with a dream 1-0 win over powerhouses Man City. The league was a disaster however and relegation was confirmed with a 4-1 thumping at Arsenal in midweek. For all the plaudits Roberto Martinez has taken it must not be forgotten he is responsible for the relegation. Setting his teams up week in week out and taking a few pastings along the way. Nice open football is all well and good but results are needed too. A feature of his side is defensive frailties, they are prone to mistakes and bad positioning and time after time teams waltz through the open backline. With just 1 win, 1 draw and 5 defeats in the last 7 games relegation was assured. Injury problems remain for The Latics with Ronny Stam, Ivan Ramis and Maynor Figuroa all out for the defence. Midfield sees Jose Beusejour missing out with new buzz player Callum McManaman unlikely to figure after getting taken out in the Arsenal game a few times.
Aston Villa came good at the right time and posted some decent results over the last couple of months. 5 wins, 1 draw and 3 defeats over the last 9 games with 20 goals scored and 13 conceded in some exciting matches. That Christian Benteke never scooped the Young Player of The Year trophy was a bit of a travesty. The Congo DR forward was astonishing at times and simply unplayable in several games. Many top teams will casting their eyes over the now Belgian interntional and there is no way Villa can keep him. Paul Lambert has been exceptional as Villa battled away at the bottom, at Norwich he showed his potential and he has confirmed it here for sure. Key men missing for Villa in all areas; Ciaran Clarke and Matthew Lowton both have until Sunday to prove their fitness. In the middle Karim El Ahmedi is doubtful while Chris Herd and Marc Albrighton are out for sure. Up front is the big loss with Benteke suspended.
WIGAN – ASTON VILLA: BETTING TIPS
I was tempted by the big price on Villa until I learned of the Benteke suspension. Neither side really appeals at the odds offered although Villa have all the motivation with the possibility of moving up six places and all the extra prize money that entails. However I see this game being a very open affair so prefer to go Over 2.5 goals. Both sides have been conceding heavily over the past few months and with a few players missing from both sides goals look on the cards here.
