Bayer Leverkusen has had some bad results lately with three consecutive losses. However, two of those losses came away against Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, two teams that at the moment seems to be quite a lot better than the rest. Regardless of this, Leverkusen has not performed well enough. There was some improvement when they fielded a very offensive team against BATE Borisov in the Champions League, but their performance against Dortmund was simply not good enough. They were probably missing Sven Bender as a defensive midfield partner with Kramer, and he is doubtful for this match. The same goes for the defender Hilbert, he also did not play in the last match. Otherwise there are no new injuries or suspensions to report.

Mainz has nine points after five matches. Similar to the 2014/15 season they have started this season in strong fashion, and I am quite impressed. The club has lost some very important players, but are coming up with new players while at the same time maintaining the club identity. The team is best at counter-attacking, and should get plenty of chances tonight. Mainz has only Fabian Frei unavailable, and he has been unavailable for two matches now.

This is a match where Leverkusen probably (but not definitely) will field an offensive team, and it could be similar to the team against BATE. This fixture last season was controlled by Leverkusen, but it ended 0-0. Mainz were compact in defence and got a few opportunities on counter-attack. Tonight’s match should not be that different I believe. But considering the current season form, the difference between the two teams might be smaller now compared to last season, and I do not see a point in backing Leverkusen with a pre-game bet. Their form is not good enough, so if you want to bet on them I recommend that you watch the match live and then consider betting.

For me it is more attractive betting Mainz +1 at odds 7/6 (2.17) with BetVictor. I will also be watching the match live and look for a bet on the over in total goals. Especially if Leverkusen is fielding a very offensive team, then Mainz will also get several chances on the counter-attack, and we could quickly see over 2.5 and 3.5 goals.
