BORUSSIA DORTMUND V MAINZ 05 PREDICTIONS

Dortmund are safe in 2^nd in the Bundesliga and may be looking ahead to their midweek Champions League clash with Real Madrid.  Mainz are still in the hunt for a European place but need to improve their recent poor form.

Borussia Dortmund are 2^nd in the Bundesliga with 58 points from 29 matches.  They are 20 points behind Champions Bayern Munich but have an 8 point lead over 3^rd place Leverkusen so 2^nd spot looks safe.  Dortmund’s main focus for the rest of the season will be on the Champions league where they take on Real Madrid in the semi-final this week.  They played Madrid in the group stages and beat them 2-1 at home before drawing 2-2 away, things are expected to be more difficult in this tie but they will be confident they can get the result.

Mainz are 9^th in the Bundesliga with 39 points from 29 matches, which leaves them 4 points off a Europa League place and 7 points off the final Champions League place.  They have not won in 4 games however and have lost their last two matches so are falling away week after week.  They’ll need to put a run of wins together to end the year if they want to have any chance of Europe next season.

Dortmund are strong favourites here and the only way I can see them losing is if they are looking ahead to the Champions League match and taking this one for granted.  They will no doubt rest a few players but their squad is strong enough to overcome that so I still expect them to win.
