Gladbach is bottom of the table after three matches and a goal difference of 2-8. They lost a clear 4-0 to Dortmund, while the losses to Mainz and Werder Bremen were narrower. In their last match against Werder Bremen they showed some promise, but in 90 minutes overall they were too unstable. The coach Lucien Favre certainly has some work to do with this team, but tonight he will at least be backed by a sold-out Borrusia Park stadium.

I have mentioned this before in other predictions and season previews: the club is missing Kramer and Kruse, two really good players that left the club before the season started. Lars Stindl, a replacement for Kruse, did score against Werder Bremen, he is a good player but still not a complete replacement for Kruse. The club has not found a replacement for Kramer yet, and he is clearly one of the best defensive midfielder in the Bundesliga.

For tonight’s match Gladbach will have to do without their regular midfielder Xhaxa, as he was sent off with a red card in the match against Werder Bremen. Herrmann, an offensive midfielder that is also a regular starting XI player, will also be unavailable. Norwegian Nordtveit will probably replace Xhaxa, while Andre Hahn will probably replace Herrmann. The defender Dominguez will also pass, although he has not played any of the matches this season. Fabian Johnson, a player that played many matches last season (either as left back or left midfield), is also unavailable. The highly experienced defender Martin Stranzl is back and the coach is saying he will start, but he has not played much in the last six months, so we have our doubts as to whether or not he will last a whole match.

Hamburger SV

HSV has three points after three matches. They had no chance against Bayern Munich and lost 5-0, but in the next match they counter attacked well and beat Stuttgart 3-2 (but overall Stuttgart dominated the match). In the last match they lost 2-1 against Koln. It was an open match that could have gone both ways, and HSV’s performance was not that bad. HSV took the lead 1-0 and had chances to decide the match, but Koln fought their way back and took the win via a questionable penalty that also ended with a red card to Spahic – so perhaps not a much deserved win for Koln.

Emir Spahic is unavailable due to that red card. Johan Djorou is back and available, and we expect he will start the match. Rene Adler, a very solid goalie, will have to pass due to injury, and the same goes for his replacement Andreas Hirzler, so the goalie will probably be Drobny. Aaron Hunt has been brought in from Wolfsburg, he is a player that has the potential to be an improvement for the HSV squad, and it is possible he will start in tonight’s match.

Gladbach and HSV met earlier this summer in a friendly, an encounter that ended in a goalless draw. There were few goals scored last season also, Gladbach won 1-0 at home and in Hamburg the match ended 1-1.

Gladbach is the natural favourite for this match, but we find it hard to back the team that is bottom of the table when the odds on offer is around 7/10 (1.70). Gladbach still has a lot to prove before we consider these kind of bets. Both teams are missing some players of good quality, so this match does have some question marks.

The odds on HSV is more interesting, and I recommend a bet on HSV +1, currently on offer by BetVictor at 11/14 (1.79).
