Both Mainz 05 and Schalke 04 are still in contention for European Football next season. Going into this tie Mainz is leading Schalke in the Bundesliga standings by three points. At the start of the season I’d say that was quite unthinkable. Schalke has a lot of top drawer talent in the squad, but lately they’ve been nothing but poor. Can they pick up some form here against Mainz 05 before they go to Istanbul next midweek to face Galatasaray in the Champions League?

Stats and Facts

Mainz 05 is 6-1-3 at home in the Bundesliga. Their goal difference is 14-9. Schalke is 2-3-5 away (12-20). In terms of form Mainz is 2-2-2 (7-7) overall in their last six versus Schalke’s 1-1-4 (8-16).

The last two times the sides have met at the Coface Arena it has ended in one win each. The reverse fixture this season ended 3-0 for Schalke 04.

Team News

For the home side Bungert (Defender) is out. He hasn’t played since October. Choupo-Moting (Forward) hasn’t played since late in September, and is out still. Parker (Forward) is suspended. He played last against Augsburg.

Schalke 04 will miss defenders; Papadopoulos and Uchida. Papadopoulos has been out quite a while, and Uchida since 02.02.  The attacking midfielder Afellay is still out as well. Bits and part player Moritz (Midfielder) is ruled out. Huntelaar (Star Striker) will be missing yet again, and fellow striker Marica (Striker) is sitting this one out too.

In the reverse fixture that Schalke was the better side in Papadopoulos, Uchida, Affelay, Holteby and Huntelaar all played. None of these will take part here. Given the upcoming Champions League match for schalke, missing key players and general poor run of form, I am surprised to see 2.36 (34/25) for the home side. For me that is a really good price given the setting.
