AEL Limassol of Cyprus finished runners up in the Cypriot league last season, with an agonising final day loss to APOEL meaning they clinched the title ahead of them. In Europe AEL have only contested the Champions league once before. That was in the 2012-13 season where they exited at the play-off stage, though they won all three home games on the way, including defeating Belgian side Anderlecht. Zenit finished runners up in Russia last season, and they are the highest ranked side in the competition at this stage by some way. Reaching the group stages is a minimum expectation for Villas Boas side who lifted the 2008 UEFA cup, and it will be a massive surprise if they fail to progress from this tie. The game will be played in Larnaca not the AEL usual stadium, as their own ground is not deemed suitable on UEFA standards.
