Wales will play Belgium in the quarterfinals, two sides who know each other well as they were together in the last two major qualifying tournaments also. Wales won their group after two deserved wins, beating Slovakia and Russia with ease. They lost to England 2-1 to a very late goal in a low quality but high tempo game.  The knockout stages saw them come up against Northern Ireland. In another game of low quality it was an own goal that separated the teams after very few clear cut chances arose. Skipper Ash Williams damaged a shoulder last match and is likely to sit out, a big miss in the centre of defence. Belgium have been quality since their opening day loss. I said it at the time but it was probably the wakeup call they needed, plus they moved to an “easier” section of the draw finishing runners up. They lost 2-0 to Italy game day one and it was a fair result. Since then they have won all three games and scored 8 times. They beat Republic of Ireland 3-0 and Sweden 1-0 in the groups and pulled apart Hungary 4-0 in the round of 16. Thomas Vermaelen is suspended for this one. These sides have played each other 4 times in the last two years with 1 win a piece and 2 draws, they know each other well.

Belgium are really pciking up some momentum now and are scoring for fun. They have a complete squad with quality in all areas and some options off the bench. Wales are Ramsey and Bale with Allen behind and then not much else. They looked very ordinary indeed against a poor Northern Ireland side and could get hammered here if they play to that level.
