ACADEMICA V ATLETICO MADRID PREDICTIONS AND PREVIEW: BETTING STATS AND FACTS

Academica are aiming to improve on their mid-table position in the Portuguese Primeira Liga this season.  They are currently in 10^th spot with 8 points from 8 matches, having won 1, drawn 5 and lost 2.  Their recent form is poor with both losses coming within their last 5 games and they have won just one match of their last 5.  In the Europa League things are just as tough with 2 losses and a draw from their 3 matches and they sit equal bottom of the group and are very unlikely to progress.

Atletico has had an amazing season so far but lost their first match of the season this weekend.  They are still 2^nd in la liga with 25 points form 10 matches but now are 3 points off Barcelona in top spot.  They will hope the 2-0 loss to Valencia was just a blip and they can get back to their winning ways where they had won 8 in a row before this week.  In the Europa League they are easily going to qualify from the group with 3 wins out of 3 already.

Academica are treating their time in the Europa League as a one off bonus this year.  They became the only team outside of Porto or Sporting to win the Taca de Portugal in 7 years when they unexpectedly beat Sporting in the final last season to win their spot in the Europa League.  Their first concentration is still the league and trying to keep the team in a top half spot and well away from the relegation battle but they are certainly enjoying their European adventure, even if the results aren’t quite going to plan.

Atletico will be disappointed they finally felt their first taste of defeat this season, but it was going to come sooner or later.  This won’t change their aim of a top 4 finish and might actually take some pressure off them as they are no longer trying to keep pace with Barcelona at the top of the table.  They will rest some players for this match but the teams they have been putting out in the Europa League so far have still been strong and should be good enough to control this match.
