This Europa League game has the setting Hollywood’s movie makers only can dream about creating. In St. Petersburg Liverpool were highly unefficient . The Reds got punished by the Zenit offense, and now they are two goals down. Is Zenit through, or can Liverpool rise to the occasion at Anfield?
Stats and Facts
Liverpool is 1-2-3 in all competitions in their last six. At Anfield Liverpool is 4-0-2 in their last six. Five out of Liverpool’s last home games have ended with a clean sheet for the Reds. In four out of their five last matches they’ve also scored three or more goals.
Zenit is 3rd domestically. They’ve proven themselves to be a very good away side with 6-2-1 away from home. They drew Anzhi away and beat league leader CSKA so they’re absolutely capable. Before they were knocked out of the Champions League Zenit did beat AC Milan away and drew Malaga.
Team News
Vladimir Bystrov is suspended (Midfielder). Bruno Alves (Central Defender) is back from suspension. He could feature here. Liverpool will have to do without Daniel Sturridge (Striker) and Coutinho (Attacking midfielder). Martin Kelly (Defender) and Fabio Borini (Striker) are out injured.
Betting predictions
Liverpool trashed a weakened Swansea side 5-0 this weekend. Coutinho and Sturridge played really well, so they’ll be missed. Jordan Henderson, Jonjo Shelvey, Suso and Joe Allen are in contention for Coutinho’s place. Sturridge is most likely to be replaced by Raheem Sterling. It is expected Liverpool will field a very strong side, and go for it. The question is, can they do it?
The stats indicate Liverpool has improved. Especially at home they’ve been very dominant. Even without Coutinho and Sturridge they should be able to impose themselves on this game, keep hold of the ball and create chances. Zenit however is a very capable side when it comes to counter attack. Liverpool will have to be wary or else players like Hulk and Kerzhakov will tear them apart.
As usual it is all down to the odds we are offered. William Hill offers 1.70 (7/10). I think it is enough. Liverpool is eager to impress, and Anfield is starting to resemble the fortress of old again. Win for the Reds is my shout!
