Basel caused a surprise in the first leg when they upset Zenit in a 2-0 home win in Switzerland. The match was very tight and looked to be finishing goalless before Basel took the lead in the 83rd minute via a goal from Marcelo Diaz. They would have been happy taking any kind of lead to Russia but in injury time Neto gave away a penalty, resulting in his dismissal. Up stepped Alexander Frei and gave Basel a two goal lead and a great chance of getting into the next round.
Zenit have struggled lately, following up the first leg with a defeat away at Rubin Kazan. They are just back from a very long winter break in the Russian League and don’t seem to be totally off form. They are still in with a chance in the Russian League, currently sitting in 3rd position just 3 points behind second place Anzhi in the final Champions League spot.
