Copa America warm ups and up 1^st we have Ecuador facing off at Panama. Panama have improved a lot in recent years and are up to 53^rd in FIFA overall rankings (placing them 4^th in regional lists) Compare that to Ecuador who themselves are high ranked being at 34^th in the world.  These sides will face off twice in next few days home and away as Ecuador prepare for the Copa America. Here in the 1^st game in Panama City I expect a close game. Panama, since the beginning of 2014 have played 13 games. They have 6 wins, 3 draws and 4 defeats. At home they show  3 wins,1 draw and 1 loss. The level of their home victories was a bit lower however as apart from a win over Costa Rica they also played low ranking Cuba & Nicaragua. Ecuador are the typical Jekyll and Hyde side. Almost unbeatable in their high altitude fortress of Quito, yet unsteady and vulnerable on their travels. In comparable games since the start of 2014 they have played 14 and have won 5, drawn 4 and lost 5.  An interesting fact about Ecuador is the have stopped playing friendlies at home. They know its pointless and doesn’t help their cause – so all their matches have been played in USA with a game in London also. So their recent form line is somewhat better than normal – as includes three world cup games in Brazil as well as matches in America and England. They have shown quality also by beating teams such as Australia and Bolivia – while drawing with Netherlands, England and France.

Ecuador have won both matches head to head between these two sides but the important point here is its just a tune up game for them. They wont be going hell for leather to beat Panama and FIFA ranking points are all that it to play for. Coach Quinteros will use the game to see a few players and expect multiple changes for the visitors. Panama are a much improved outfit and for me the draw is the bets option.
