Spain seemed in good shape for forty minutes against Holland in their first World Cup match. They took the lead and could easily have been 2-0 up. They did show some signs of being more direct than their tiki-taka self with Costa up front as well. However, just before half time Robin van Persie showed his magic tricks and it was 1-1. For the next fifty minutes Spain was outplayed. For me; the center back pairing of Pique and Ramos never clicked and Casillas between the sticks showed the world why he was benched by Mourinho. He simply is over the top, sorry to say! Spain has a point to prove against Chile, a team they narrowly beat 2-1 in the 2010 World Cup.

Chile played a good game against Australia. The game panned out pretty much as I predicted. Cahill gave Chile a problem on set pieces and crosses in general. And Australia showed that the Chilean defense simply isn’t up for the task. They stand were high on the pitch, and all though they have got very mobile players they can be bullied. Going forward Chile was bright with Sanchez, Vargas and Valdivia in particular creating all sorts of problems for Australia. Here they will draw some confidence from the narrow loss of the previous World Cup.

David De Gea is ruled out for Spain. In other words; if they want to replace Casillas it is Liverpool's Pepe Reina that will take his place. I suspect the experienced goalie would be preferred over the younger De Gea anyway should Del Bosque decide it is time to put Casillas where he belongs (on the bench).

Run of Play

It would be very unlikely that Del Bosque changes his philosophy over night at the World Cup. He is much more likely to die by his sword. Spain should dominate possession here. Chile will be happy to soak up pressure and use their tricky attackers to cut a seemingly weak defense open. They will be more than able to use their own spells of possession though.

It is worth mentioning the sides met in Switzerland on the 10th of September 2013. On the night Chile piled on the pressure and only a late goal from Navas saved Spain blushes. The match ended 2-2. It must be said Spain did rotate the squad rather heavily on the night. Also, I do not give much weight to friendlies in general.

For me this is a World Cup game Spain should win. I would be very surprised if they aren’t able to improve their defensive setup. They got world class talent all across the pitch, and I am quite sure they’ll be fired up for this one. The world is watching, and it is now or never really for them. Chile will probably score, but in a toe-to-toe slugfest Spain should come up on top as I think that normal circumstances dictate that Spain has a much more robust defense than Chile has. If the game ends up being played in a more composed fashion Spain’s odds improve even more.
