Russia had a disappointing European Championship winning only one game and not making it out of the group stage.  They have not won for their past 3 matches including friendlies, having drawn 1-1 at home to Ivory Coast last month.

Northern Ireland has been in terrible form recently losing 4 of their past 5 games.  They managed a 3-3 home draw with Finland in their last match which will give them some hope going forward.

Russia starts their World Cup qualifying campaign by hosting Northern Ireland in Moscow.  They will be expecting a routine win to put them on their way to qualifying in a group they will have an excellent chance of topping, with Portugal the only other country who looks on their level.

Northern Ireland will be targeting their home games against the weaker teams to pick up points, and anything against the top sides will be a bonus for them.  They’ll be hoping to keep things tight and maybe escape with a 0-0 draw or snatch a goal from a set piece.
