RUBIN KAZAN – ZENIT PETERSBURG: PREDICTIONS

A massive game in Kazan as Zenit St Petersburg travel for an interesting tie.

Rubin Kazan are not at the very top level they reached a few years ago, but they are a decent outfit still. Quoted around 14-1 for the title and 5^th favourites they have to be respected and certainly at home. Last year they were so strong at home that only Champions CSKA managed more victories at their own ground. The side is real cosmopolitan mix of players from all over the world. Rubin have begun the season with a 1-1 away draw in Kuban Krasnodar.

Zenit St Petersburg are one of the biggest sides in Russian football at the moment thanks to the investment of energy giant Gazprom.  Strangely though the introduction of Hulk and Witsel into the squad seemed to unbalance the side. On a playing level but also off pitch as several players went public with an inbalance on wages. Zenit's style hasn't changed much since Spalletti took over three years ago. It's still the same, a basic 4-3-3. They opened up with a great result, winning 2-1 away at Krasnodar.

You have to respect Rubin for sure here but the sheer gulf in class between these two sides is widening all the time. Zenit opened up with a solid away performance at Krasnodar, while Rubin could only draw with their close neighbours Kuban. Historically this is an evenly matches affair and in Kazan Rubin have won 4 of the 8 games.  I just think Zenit are looking a real team now and this looks a low scoring win for me. I take Zenit St Petersburg at 2.40 with William Hill.
