GRASSHOPPERS – BASEL: PREDICTIONS

Two of the biggest sides in Switzerland meet in the opening weeks of the season, fierce rivals Grasshoppers host Basel.

Grasshoppers of Zurich are one of the most successful sides in the country with 27 league titles.  Leagues have been a bit thin on the ground of late though, they have not won since 2003. Last season was a case of nearly but not quite as they lost to eternal rivals Basel by a mere three points, chasing them for almost the entire season.  Playing matches at local rivals FC Zurich while their own ground is constructed hardly helps. Grasshoppers squad is packed with quality and they should have a good crack at the title again. They opened up with a great 2-0 away win at a decent St Gallen side.

Basel have definitely been the team of this century, with 16 titles collected by 8 since 2000. This strong side have really benefited from the continual entries into the Champions League. Reaping the cash rewards and investing wisely in player talent and youth development. Basel have the best squad in the league for sure and early championship quotes of 1-2 are hard to argue with. Basel opened their season with a 3-1 home win over  Aurau.

GRASSHOPPERS – BASEL: BETTING TIPS

A huge game for gameweek 2 and one both sides would rather not have at this early stage. Basel are the better side for sure and have the advantage here. Grasshoppers lose a bit of home advantage as  they are currently playing at local rivals FC Zurich’s ground. I think Basel will be keen to get an early blow in and take them to grab a win here. Basel at 2,25 (williamhill) looks a good price and already a few bookmakers are shortening the away side.
