Gulbis is a very good player on hard court. He is a big lad at 1.90m so his serve/volley game is pretty good, and he showed this in Delray Beach, where he won the tournament having come in as a qualifier. Here at Indian Wells he has to go through qualification yet again against young american Christian Harrison. He is a promising young player, but at 1.78m I doubt he is a big threat in terms of the serve on faster surfaces. The Indian Wells tournament is played on hard court, and should favor Gulbis.
Gulbis has a lot of good tennis in him, but he is his own biggest enemy as well. Son of a rich Latvian he has had a silver spoon life style, and his skill is perhaps not equalled hunger wise. He is known to like the nightlife and he tries out a bit of acting and other things he considers "fun". However, when he really goes for it he shows he can be top 20 material. Right now it looks like he is GAME ON, so I will be backing him to brush young Harrison aside 2-0 in sets.
