US Open 2012: Preview of Women's tournament
The 2012 US Open first round matches kick off on Monday 27th August. In this tennis prediction article we take a look at the top players in the Women's tournament.
The top 10 seeded players
1. Victoria Azarenka is still No. 1 on the WTA rankings. She took herself to a bronze medal in the London Olympics after beating Maria Kirilenko in the battle for third place. Azarenka has been given a really good draw for this tournament, but she’s never performed well at the US OPEN. Her best result is coming to the 4th round.
Will face Alexandra Panova in the first round.
2. Agnieszska Radwanska has struggled with her shoulder since she started with the preparations for hard court, and this also forced her to retire from the last tournament she played. Radwanska showed good form in her last Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon, where she advanced through to the final, but lost to Serena Williams.
Will face Nina Bratchikova from Russia in the first round.
3. Maria Sharapova was in the Olympic final, where she was totally humiliated by Serena Williams with a 0-6 1-6! Sharapova has not participated in a single tournament since the Olympics, so it is difficult to say how she will adapt to hard court. The positive is that she’s got a good draw, which means she can still find her form and go far in this tournament, even though her form was better when she won the French Open in June.
4. Serena Williams is a player everyone fears on the WTA Tour these days. Her form is simply amazing and she seems to be in her own class at the moment. Serena won both Wimbledon and the Olympic finals and of course goes up as the biggest favorite to win this tournament. Her defeat in Cincinnati against Kerber was somewhat surprising, but this will probably not matter as her mind is set at the tournament in New York now.
Serena has got a good draw, where we will most likely see her go a long way here.
5. Petra Kvitova has again shown us good form, in which she usually goes through to a semifinal or final these days. Disappointed in the Olympics, but otherwise it has been lots of good results from the Czech girl lately. Won the tournament in New Haven on Saturday over Maria Kirilenko, but I would say she was a bit lucky to win in two straight sets.
She is a player that can challenge even the best on a good day, and have more to go on than what we’ve seen so far of her. This is also the Grand Slam tournament she has struggled with before, and it will be interesting to see if she can do something about this.
6. Angelique Kerber has really grown a lot in a short time, she is full of confidence and has proved she can cope with the very best. She has shown good form prior to US Open, but unfortunately for her she has a pretty tough draw. If you just look at who she might meet in the second round, namely, Venus Williams, who has won this tournament two times and has only been knocked out once in the US Open in the second round. In other words, Kerber has a tough task ahead of her.
7. Samantha Stosur is the defending champion. Stosur has been in terrible form in recent times, and nothing seems to be right for the Australian girl.
Stosur meets Petra Martic in the first round, which could be a far more even game than the odds suggests. One thing should be said, though, you never know what you get from Stosur, she is the type of player that can suddenly improve and show great play.
8. Caroline Wozniacki has dropped dramatically in the rankings over the past year. Nothing seems to go right for the Danish girl, and she tried to get help from other trainers and not just her father Piotr. It’s difficult to imagine her winning another Grand Slam title the way she’s playing – as she simply becomes too defensive in her style. It will nevertheless be said that her best results have come in the US Open, where she has a record of two semifinals and a final. Won a good draw, but goes against the biggest favorite of them all in a possible quarter final, namely Serena Williams.
9. Li Na is a very exciting player who can beat most players. Has been good during the run up to the US Open. Went all the way to the final in Montreal, and she won the tournament in Cincinnati – in other words you can say she’s in her top form at the moment.
Li Na won a decent draw where she’ll meet up with Stosur in the fourth round and maybe Azarenka in a quarter final. All in all a decent draw, but already in the third round she could be facing Kim Clijsters who won this tournament in 2009 and 2010.
10. Sara Errani has grown tremendously this year – as her results in previous Grand Slam tournaments this year show us. She went through to the final in the French Open after showing us great tennis, but was in the end not good enough against Sharapova.
Errani is a player who moves well, she has a good defensive game, but lacks that little extra in attack to go all the way in this tournament. Her best result at the US Open unttil date is a third round.
The biggest favorite
Serena Williams has simply been in a class by herself, she looks unstoppable in these big tournaments. When Serena is playing at her best, it's hard to grab a game during the match, and she goes rightfully up as the biggest favorite on the women’s side.
The biggest outsider
Li Na has what it takes to win a Grand Slam tournament, and she proved this last year by winning her first title. Her game has been top notch and she has played two tournaments on hard court before the US Open, both resulting in a place in the finals, and one of them ending in a title.
LI Na could go all the way - of course she has a long way ahead of her - but it's a good time to meet players like Stosur who’s out of shape and not the least Kim Clijsters who doesn’t show her best game either these days (and is playing her last US Open).
The Us Open Women's tournament is very open and there are many that can surprise us, but I will keep Li Na as the biggest outsider. Her attacking play is good enough to challenge even the best on a good day.
