SWITZERLAND V ECUADOR : QUALIFICATION

Switzerland booked their place in the finals with a (7-3-0) group record that saw them comfortably through ahead of Iceland, Slovenia and Norway. Ecuador secured the fourth place in the South American section with a (7-4-5) record that meant they qualified automatically ahead of Uruguay.

THE SWITZERLAND SQUAD

Goalkeepers: Diego Benaglio (Wolfsburg), Roman Buerki (Grasshopper), Yann Sommer (Basel)Defenders: Johan Djourou (Hamburg), Michael Lang (Grasshopper), Stephan Lichtsteiner (Juventus), Ricardo Rodriguez (Wolfsburg), Fabian Schaer (Basel), Philippe Senderos (Valencia), Steve von Bergen (Young Boys), Reto Ziegler (Sassuolo)Midfielders: Tranquillo Barnetta (Eintracht Frankfurt), Valon Behrami (Napoli), Blerim Dzemaili (Napoli), Gelson Fernandes (Freiburg), Goekhan Inler (Napoli), Xherdan Shaqiri (Bayern Munich), Valentin Stocker (Basel)Forwards: Josip Drmic (Nurnberg), Mario Gavranovic (Zurich), Admir Mehmedi (Freiburg), Haris Seferovic (Real Sociedad), Granit Xhaka (Borussia Moenchengladbach)

The Swiss are usually tough to beat, have a good team ethic but are pretty dour to watch. This squad though has the potential to excite also with talent such as Inler, Shaqiri and Xhaka having the star quality to influence any game. With decent defensive options also this Switzerland side could go further than many expect them to in Brazil, especially given this does not look the toughest of groups.

THE ECUADOR SQUAD

Goalkeepers: Maximo Banguera (Barcelona SC), Alexander Dominguez (LDU Quito), Adrian Bone (El Nacional). Defenders: Frickson Erazo (Flamengo), Jorge Guagua, Jhon Narvaez, Oscar Bagui, Gabriel Achilier (all Emelec), Walter Ayovi (Pachuca), Juan Carlos Paredes (Barcelona SC), Cristian Ramirez (Fortuna Duesseldorf). Midfielders: Segundo Castillo (Al-Hilal), Carlos Gruezo (Stuttgart), Renato Ibarra (Vitesse Arnhem), Cristian Noboa (Dynamo Moscow), Pedro Quinonez (Emelec), Luis Saritama (Barcelona SC), Antonio Valencia (Manchester United), Edison Mendez (Independiente Santa Fe), Fidel Martinez (Tijuana), Oswaldo Minda (Chivas USA), Michael Arroyo (Atlante). Forwards: Felipe Caicedo (Al-Jazira), Jefferson Montero (Morelia), Joao Rojas (Cruz Azul), Armando Wila (Universidad Catolica, Ecuador), Jaime Ayovi (Tijuana), Enner Valencia (Pachuca), Cristian Penilla (Barcelona SC), Angel Mena (Emelec).

The big thing with Ecuador is their lack of ability to play away from altitude, and their away record (0-3-5) in qualifying backs this theory up. Antonio Valencia, midfielder of Man Utd is their main man for sure, and Felipe Caicedo is the main hope for goals, but the defence is a definite area for concern with injuries limiting quality options in the squad.

WARM UP MATCHES

Switzerland enjoyed two warm up wins with the first a 1-0 win against Jamaica, when a 4-5-1 set up saw half a dozen changes as Hitzfeld had a good look at his options, and the margin of victory should have been greater than just 1-0. The second game was a 2-0 victory over Peru which will have given the Swiss an idea of how Ecuador may operate as fellow South Americans. A similar 4-5-1 formation was in evidence and again lots of changes were made during the course of the game.

Ecuador had two draws and a loss in their three warm up games, but all were against sides competing at the finals, so opposition was strong. They began with an excellent 1-1 draw in Holland, although they enjoyed just 28% of possesion in this game. Next up was a slightly disappointing 3-1 defeat to Mexico, and finally they fought ot an excellent 2-2 draw with England in Miami, where they more than held their own. All warm up games used a 4-4-2 formation which is their norm, and plenty of subs were used.

MATCH ANALYSIS

This is a game that both sides may target as one that if they win they should qualify and as a result a more open game than many anticipate could ensue. For me Switzerland tick all the boxes, and have the better quality all round the pitch. Solid at the back, and with enough flair players to trouble a possibly weak Ecuador defence, they could set themselves up nicely for the tournament with a comfortable win. Ecuador will have been heartened by their warm up efforts against European opponents though, and showed in those games that they can compete away from their Quito base, though results show they are far less effective away from there.

SWITZERLAND V ECUADOR: 1X2 BETTING TIP

Switzerland have drifted from an early 2.30 quote to a very tempting 2.60(8/5)Bet365, and if you havent already got on I suggest you do now. I fancy the Swiss to do well in this tournament, and if they are to cement that belief they must win this match against the weakest of the South American sides on show. A very strong team spirit, and an influx of young talent makes this Switzerland team one to keep on the right side of in this World Cup, and money can be made betting on them- starting here...........with BET365
