AZ Alkmaar got past Heerenveen 3-1 over two legs to set up this Europa league play-off final against Groningen who smashed Vitesse 5-1 in the first round. AZ finished eighth in the regular season with 47 points, where they won just one of their last six games. Beaten finalists in the Dutch Cup and quarter finalists in the Europa league it hasn’t been a bad season, but the finishing league position was disappointing nonetheless. Home form (10-5-2) was good in the regular season, and it is a must they get something at home here against a vibrant opponent. Groningen won both legs against Vitesse, and the 4-1 away win was particularly pleasing. It took their winning streak to eight, and they rightly fear no one at present. Their excellent finish to the season saw them finish four points and a place above AZ in the regular season, and they will be keen to finish the season in this rich vein of form. Top scorer Johannsson is a doubt for AZ after missing the game against Heerenveen and Magnasco(def) is out for Groningen.
