Germany take on Algeria in Porto Alegre in this last sixteen game that has added spice due to the events of the 1982 World Cup. There Algeria defeated what was then West Germany in the group stages before being eliminated due to a highly suspicious drawn game between the Germans and Austrians meant those two qualified, and which still leaves a bitter taste in the football world.

A high tempo start from the Germans saw a resounding 4-0 win against Portugal with Thomas Muller wasting no time in getting amongst the World Cup goals again with a hat trick. Even though Portugal where down to ten men for more than a half it was a highly impressive display, sure to make everyone sit up and take notice.

A 2-2 draw with Ghana was next for Germany, and it was certainly a less convincing display with Ghana perhaps the better side on balance.

The final group game against USA required just a point to top the group, but an excellent Muller strike got the win for Germany. The Germans dominated possession here, but the feeling is they were never out of second gear and could have stepped it up if required.

Algeria began Group H against Belgium, and they stunned the opposition when they took the lead with a penalty kick. An excellent defensive display looked set to be rewarded until two late strikes meant they ended up with nothing from the game.

Next up was South Korea and a totally different mindset was taken, and the more attack minded Algerians had a 3-0 lead before the half time break. An equally pulsating second half followed and a full time score of 4-2 fully justified the Algerians.

Maybe the least taking display came against Russia, but after going behind early and looking to be on the way out Algeria deservedly equalised on the hour, to get through to the knockout stages for the first time in their history.

Podolski looks set to miss out with injury, but defender Jerome Boateng is fit again for Germany. No problems to report for Algeria.

Algeria will most likely set up as they did against Belgium in a more defensive mindset, as they attempt to nullify the German offensive threat, while relying on slick counter attacking themselves. Germany showed they can be patient against the USA so this shouldn’t pose a problem to them, though an early Germany goal would change everything from an Algerian perspective.

Anything but a Germany win would be a massive shock here, and I wouldn’t be rushing to take the 12.00 offered on an Algerian win in ninety minutes. The draw at 5.75 is slightly tempting, but it has to be Germany at 1.30(3/10)Bet365 that is the selection . Algeria looked good against South Korea, but decidedly ordinary against European opponents Belgium and Russia, and Germany can put them to the sword. It may take time as the Algerians will try and soak up the pressure, but the offensive threat of Germany will eventually prove far too hot for the Africans, and once they find the breakthrough there will be no way back for Algeria.
