GHANA V USA : QUALIFICATION
Ghana reached the finals with a (5-0-1)record in the group which saw them top, and followed up with a 7-3 aggregate play-off victory over Egypt to book their place. USA comfortably topped the weak looking CONCACAF section with a (7-1-2) record that saw them win the group by four points.
THE GHANA SQUAD
Goalkeepers: Fatau Dauda (Orlando Pirates), Adam Kwarasey (Stromsgodset), Stephen Adams (Aduana Stars)Defenders: Samuel Inkoom (Platanias), Daniel Opare (Standard Liege), Harrison Afful (Esperance), John Boye (Rennes), Jonathan Mensah (Evian), Rashid Sumalia (Mamelodi Sundowns)Midfielders: Michael Essien (AC Milan), Sulley Muntari (AC Milan), Mohammed Rabiu (Kuban Krasnodar), Kwadwo Asamoah (Juventus), Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu (Udinese), Afriyie Acquah (Parma), Christian Atsu (Vitesse Arnhem), Albert Adomah (Middlesbrough), Andre Ayew (Marseille), Mubarak Wakaso (Rubin Kazan)Forwards: Asamoah Gyan (Al Ain), Kevin-Prince Boateng (Schalke), Abdul Majeed Waris (Valenciennes), Jordan Ayew (Sochaux).
.Many of the same faces here as in previous World cups in which Ghana have reached the knockout stages the last twice, including a cruel quarter final defeat in 2010. The problem could be that its four years on and star players like Essien are in decline, although there will always be a strong bond in this squad which is a positive, and they did reach the African Nations final earlier this year, losing out on penalties. Players to look out for are midfielder Asamoah the Juventus midfielder, and striker Majeed Waris who may play a key role if Ghana are to progress.
THE USA SQUAD
Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)Defenders: DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City), John Brooks (Hertha Berlin), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Timmy Chandler (Nürnberg), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy), Fabian Johnson (Borussia Mönchengladbach), DeAndre Yedlin (Seattle Sounders FC)Midfielders: Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Alejandro Bedoya (Nantes), Michael Bradley (Toronto FC), Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg), Julian Green (Bayern Munich), Jermaine Jones (Besiktas), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City)Forwards: Jozy Altidore (Sunderland), Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders FC), Aron Johannsson (AZ Alkmaar), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)
Although still sure to be tough to beat this looks like one of the weakest USA squads for a while, and the the decision to omit Landon Donovan is baffling in the extreme, especially as Jozy Altidore gets a place!!! Looking through the squad it lacks overall quality with old stalwarts Tim Howard and Clint Dempsey their main men, and it will be a surprise to me if they progress beyond the group stage this time from a tough looking group.
WARM UP GAMES
A win and a draw in the two Ghana preparation matches, first up was a 1-0 loss to the Netherlands. Played in Holland the Africans fared well and used plenty of changes so as to get a run out for most of the squad. A 4-5-1 formation was adopted in that game, but a more attacking 4-3-3 was in evidence for a convincing 4-0 win over fellow finalists South Korea in Miami. Jordan Ayew bagged a hat trick here to press his claims for a starting space, and it was an impressive showing which will have buoyed spirits ahead of the real business.
U.S.A limbered up with three friendly victories, a convincing 2-0 verdict over Azerbaijan was followed with a good 2-1 win against Turkey, when they made the most of the chances they got. Last up was a 2-1 victory over Nigeria, which will have given invaluable experience of African opposition ahead of the Ghana clash. Another plus point from this game was the double strike for much maligned striker Jozy Altidore to boost his confidence. Expect to see the 4-4-2 diamond style formation adopted in the finals by the USA squad, as it seems to be Klinsmanns preffered approach, especially for the Ghana game.
BETTING ANALYSIS
If either side are to progress then they must win this game you would think with Germany and Portugal to come. Ghana look the stronger outfit for me, and though a close game looks certain it is the Africans who can force the win. The USA results log looks quite impressive on paper, but on closer inspection the majority of opposition they have faced in the last twelve months has been in the main mediocre, and there is nothing in the squad that excites. Ghana have that bit more quality flowing through the side, and proved in reaching this years African Nations final that they are still one of the strongest African teams.
GHANA V USA: EARLY BETTING TIPS 1X2
No real movement in the match prices for this one, and the original 1X2 selection for a Ghana win at 2.62(13/8)Bet365 still stands.USA are neverv easy to play with their strong team ethic, but overall quality is lacking and the added flair at Ghanas disposal can sway the balance in the Africans favour.
